The Facts
John Carroll University is a rather small, private institution located in the town of University Heights, Ohio, and is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. The university has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 4,300 students, however, the graduate Boler School of Business is significantly smaller, and is home to about 263 graduate business students. Approximately 80% of the currently enrolled students have had an average of 3 years of full-time professional experience, a factor taken into serious consideration by the admissions committee when reviewing applications. Perhaps as a result of this fact, the average age of enrollment is around 27, however, ages range from 23 to 37. Approximately 10% of the currently enrolled students entered directly from undergraduate school, and none of the currently enrolled students already have a graduate degree. The school is perhaps best known for its emphasis on general management and its education by a combination of theory and case methods. The Boler School of Business offers graduate business degrees in the Master of Business Administration (MBA), the Master of Science in Accountancy (MSAcc), as well as a joint degree in communications. The school also offers internships, as well as a foreign exchange program with a business school in Beijing, China. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of marketing, finance, as well as general management.
Admission to John Carroll University's graduate Boler School of Business is not particularly competitive among the relatively few students who apply; last year over 78 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 69 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 48 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.1, as well as an average GMAT score of about 500. The admissions committee requires all applicants to have a minimum undergraduate GPA of at least a 2.5, as well as a minimum GMAT score of at least 460. Students are able to begin graduate course work in the fall, spring, or summer, and are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis.
The graduate Boler School of Business has 31 full-time faculty members, all of whom hold a doctorate. The school is also home to 6 part-time faculty members. The average graduate business class usually numbers around 25 students, and most faculty members teach an average of 18 credit hours at any given time.
Placement Services
The school has rather limited placement services, as most students are already employed full-time when they enroll. However, the limited services are available to both current students as well as alumni for an unlimited amount of time after they receive their degrees, and include career counseling as well as job listings.
What's Good
"The school has a very intimate atmosphere, which is ideal, I think for this kind of education."
"The faculty is extremely dedicated to their work here as well as to their students, and it shows in profound ways."
"The administration is amazing, and they do all they can to make your experience here as fruitful as possible."
What's Bad
"I wish we were closer to an urban area, that way, there would be more internships available."
"The career services are pretty limited; you're basically on your own when it comes to finding a job."
"Our course options could be more diverse; I get bored with the whole management take on things."
