The Facts

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a rather moderately-sized, prestigious, private institution located in the town of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 10,200 students. The graduate Sloan School of Management, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 744 graduate business students. All of the currently enrolled students have had an average of 5 years of full-time professional experience, a factor taken into serious consideration by the admissions committee when reviewing applications. Perhaps as a result of this fact, the average age of enrollment is around 28, however, ages range from 22 to 40. Approximately 19% of the currently enrolled students already have a graduate degree of some sort, and none of the students entered directly from undergraduate school. The Sloan School of Management is perhaps best known for its emphasis on team learning, as well as its 7 specialized tracks where students are able to study their particular business-related interests. The school offers graduate business degrees in the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Science in Management (MSM), as well as a doctoral program in business, and a joint degree with the Sloan School of Engineering. The school also has unique program knowing as the Leaders for Manufacturing Program (LFM), and the System Design and Management (SDM) program. The school also offers cross-registration with Harvard University and Wellesley College, as well as foreign exchange programs with England, Spain, and plenty of internship opportunities. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of strategy, new project and venture development, finance, operations and manufacturing, as well as entrepreneurship.

Admission to MIT's Sloan School of Management is extremely competitive among the many students who apply; last year, over 4,100 students applied for admission to the school and approximately 323 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 220 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.5, as well as an average GMAT score of about 707. The admissions committee requires all applicants to have a minimum GPA of at least a 3.0, as well as a minimum GMAT score of at least 550. Students are able to begin graduate course work in the fall only, and are notified of their admissions status on April 11th.

The school is home to 98 full-time faculty members, all of whom hold a doctorate. The average graduate business class numbers around 60 students, and most faculty members teach an average of 3 courses at any given time.

Placement Services

The school has rather extensive placement services available to both current students and alumni. Some of the services include career counseling, a career library, as well as online job listings. Many companies are always recruiting on campus, and last year, the majors most in demand by these companies included strategy, finance, operations, as well as marketing. The average starting salary of last year's graduating class was around $87,702, however, it ranged from $36,000 to $150,000. About 90% of the same class were able to find jobs within three months of obtaining their degrees.
