The Facts

Northern Arizona University is a rather large, public institution located in the town of Flagstaff, Arizona, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 19,728 students. The university's graduate College of Business Administration, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 50 graduate business students. Approximately 73% of the currently enrolled students have had an average of 5 years of full-time professional experience, a factor taken into serious consideration by the admissions committee when reviewing applications. Perhaps as a result of this fact, the average age of enrollment is around 25, however, ages range from 21 to 35. Approximately 48% of the currently enrolled students enter directly from undergraduate school, while about 2% of the students already have a graduate degree of some sort. The university's graduate business program is perhaps best known for its emphasis on the development of functional skills, as well as integrated business theories. The school offers graduate business degrees in the Master of Business Administration (MBA), as well as plenty of internship and work-study opportunities. The school also has joint faculty research programs, a possible emphasis in management information systems, as well as a minor in community college education. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of management information systems, decision theory, general management, as well as database management systems.

Admission to Northern Arizona University's graduate business program is quite competitive among the relatively few students who apply; last year, over 105 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 50 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 45 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.35, as well as an average GMAT score of about 540. The admissions committee requires all applicants to have a minimum undergraduate GPA of at least a 3.0, as well as a minimum GMAT score of at least 450. Students are able to begin their graduate course work in the summer only, and are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis.

The graduate business program has 52 full-time faculty members, of whom 87% hold a doctorate degree. The school is also home to 2 part-time faculty members. The average graduate business class usually numbers around 35 students, and most faculty members teach an average of 9 credit hours at any given time.

Placement Services

The school has fairly extensive placement services available to both current students an alumni, including career counseling, resume referral, and networking events. Last year, 25 companies were actively recruiting on campus, 80% of which were national corporations. The majors most in demand by these companies included management, management information systems, as well as finance. The average starting salary of the most recent graduating class was around $50,000, however, it ranged from $35,000 to $85,000. Over 90% of the same class were able to find jobs within three months of obtaining their degrees.

What's Good

"The career services here are great; there are always companies recruiting, and the office itself will help you out with anything."

"The internship programs here are awesome; they're the best learning experiences you can have."

What's Bad

"Some of the classes are a bit too large for my tastes; I wish there were more small discussion groups."

"Things do get quite competitive among us; the program is really small, which doesn't help."

"There are a lot of requirements to get done; a lot of them seem repetitive to me."
