The Facts

Northwestern University is a rather large, private institution located in the town of Evanston, Illinois, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 15,800 students. The graduate Kellogg School of Management, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 2,644 graduate business students. All of the currently enrolled students have had an average of 5 years of full-time professional experience, a factor taken into serious consideration by the admissions committee when reviewing applications. Perhaps as a result of this fact, the average age of enrollment is around 27, however, ages range from 22 to 39. Approximately 12% of the currently enrolled students already have a graduate degree of some sort, and no students entered directly from undergraduate school. The Kellogg School of Management is perhaps best known for its rather innovative combinations of case method, theory as well as group projects to prepare students for leadership roles in a global business setting. The school offers graduate business degrees in the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Management in Manufacturing (MMM), as well as a doctoral program, as joint degrees in law (JD/MBA) and medicine (MD/MBA). The school also offers plenty of work-study and internship opportunities, as well as foreign exchange programs and joint research. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of marketing, finance, organizational behavior, manufacturing, management, entrepreneurship, as well as management and strategy.

Admission to Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management is extremely competitive among those who apply; last year, over 7,630 students applied for admission to the school and approximately 800 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 600 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.45, as well as an average GMAT score of about 700. The admissions committee requires all applicants to have a minimum undergraduate GPA of at least a 3.0 as well as a minimum GMAT score of at least 500. Students are able to being graduate course work in the fall only, and are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis.

The Kellogg School of Management has 190 full-time faculty members, of whom 99% hold a doctorate degree. The school is also home to 71 part-time faculty members, of whom 75% hold a doctorate degree. The average graduate business class numbers around 55 students, and most faculty members teach an average of 4 courses at any given time.

Placement Services

The school has rather extensive placement services available to both current students and alumni through the Career Management Center and the university placement office. Last year, 320 companies were actively recruiting on campus, many of which were national and even international corporations. The average starting salary of the most recent graduating class was around $100,000, however, it ranged from $50,000 to $200,000. Over 98% of the same class were able to find jobs within three months of receiving their graduate degrees.

What's Good

"There are a lot of really fascinating courses offered here. It can be hard to choose which ones to take."

"The career management center is an excellent resource. They can do a lot to put you on the right track."

"I like the emphasis on group projects and teamwork. I think it makes people appreciate one another's efforts in a deeper way."

What's Bad

"I think some of the courses are a bit too large. I would prefer smaller, discussion oriented courses."

"There are some professors that don't seem too interested in sticking around after class to answer questions and whatnot."

"The school isn't really big on giving out financial aid, and it's not cheap."
