The Facts

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is a rather large, public institution located in the city of Newark, about 10 minutes outside of New York City. The university has a combined graduate and undergraduate enrollment of over 49,700 students, however, the graduate business school is significantly smaller, and is home to about 1,215 graduate business students. Approximately 90% of the currently enrolled students have had an average of 5 years of full-time professional experience, a factor taken into serious consideration by the admission committee when reviewing applications. Perhaps as a result of this fact, the average age of enrollment is around 27, however, ages range from 21 all the way up to 55. Approximately 3% of the currently enrolled students entered directly from undergraduate school while about 16% of students already have a graduate degree of some sort. The school is perhaps best known for its emphasis on structure through analysis of human resources, environment, as well as statistics and case studies. The school offers graduate business degrees in the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA), Master of Accountancy (MACCY), as well as a doctoral program in management, and joint degrees in law (JD/MBA), as well as the MPH/MBA, BA/MBA, BS/MBA, MS/MBA in biomedical sciences, and MD/MBA. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of finance, economics, marketing, pharmaceutical management, supply chain management, as well as ecommerce.

Admission to Rutgers Business School is quite competitive among those who apply; last year, over 1,255 students applied for admission to the school and approximately 532 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 350 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.27, as well as an average GMAT score of about 634. The admissions committee requires all applicants to have a minimum undergraduate GPA of at least a 2.5, as well as a minimum GMAT score of at least 450. The GRE is required for several of the dual degree programs. Students are able to begin graduate course work in the fall, spring, or summer, and are notified of admissions status on a rolling basis.

The average graduate business class numbers around 35 students, and most faculty members teach an average of 12 credit hours.

Placement Services

The school has rather extensive placement services available to both current students and alumni for an unlimited amount of time after receiving their degrees. These services include networking events, resume coaching, as well as career planning services. Last year, 28 companies were actively recruiting on campus, all of them were national corporations. The average starting salary of the most recent graduating class was around $75,000, however, it ranged from $31,200 to $100,000. Over 47% of the same graduating class were able to find jobs within three months of obtaining their degrees.
