The Facts

Sacred Heart University is a rather small, private institution located in the town of Fairfield, Connecticut, and is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. The university has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 6,100 students, however, the university's graduate business program is significantly smaller, and is home to about 457 graduate business students. Approximately 90% of the currently enrolled students have had an average of about 5 years of full-time professional experience, a factor taken into serious consideration by the admissions committee when reviewing applications. Perhaps as a result of this fact, the average age of enrollment is around 32, however, ages range from 21 all the way up to 64. Approximately 5% of the currently enrolled students entered directly from undergraduate school, while about 10% of the students already have a graduate degree of some sort. The school is perhaps best known for its emphasis on a broad business education, as well as its optional areas of concentration within a degree. The school offers graduate business degrees in the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Business Administration in Health Care (MBA/HC), Master of Arts in Health Systems Management (MA), as well as joint degrees in nursing (MBA/MSN), and business (BS/MBA). The school also offers work-study and internship opportunities, as well as a foreign exchange partnership with Luxembourg. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of management, accounting, finance, human resources, international business, as well as management information systems.

Admission to the university's graduate business program is fairly competitive among those who apply; last year, over 280 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 225 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 195 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 2.8, as well as an average GMAT score of about 520. The admissions committee requires all applicants to have a minimum undergraduate GPA of at least a 2.8, as well as a minimum GMAT score of at least 400. Students are able to begin their graduate course work in the fall, winter, spring, or summer, and are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis.

The graduate business program has 30 full-time faculty members, of whom 80% hold a doctorate degree. The school is also home to 47 part-time faculty members, of whom 47% hold a doctorate. The average graduate business class usually numbers around 18 students, and most faculty members teach an average of 2 courses at any given time.

Placement Services

The school has rather extensive placement services; last year, there were 70 companies actively recruiting on campus, 75% of which were national corporations. The majors most in demand by these companies included accounting and finance. The average starting salary of the most recent graduating class was around $50,000, however, it ranged from $50,000 to $75,000.

What's Good

"The classes are very small, and your professors usually get to know you very well throughout the course."

"You get to experience all areas of the business world, which I think helps out in the job market."

"The placement and career services are excellent; there are a lot of wonderful opportunities to get yourself out there and network."

What's Bad

"There are some professors who aren't too keen on giving outside help."

"I wish there was more on campus graduate housing. It's nearly impossible to find any."

"There are quite a few required courses, which can be a pain."
