The Facts

The University at Albany is a rather large branch of the larger, public State University of New York system, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 16,000 students. The graduate school of business, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 570 graduate business students. Approximately 60% of the currently enrolled students have had an average of 3 years of full-time professional experience, a factor taken into serious consideration by the admissions committee when reviewing applications. Perhaps as a result of this fact, the average age of enrollment is around 27, however, ages range from 22 to 45. Approximately 18% of the currently enrolled students enter directly from undergraduate school, while about 10% of the students already have a graduate degree of some sort. The school is perhaps best known for its combination of case study methods and traditional lectures in order to prepare students for leadership roles in the global business community. The school offers graduate business degrees in the Master of Science in Accounting (MSA), Master of Science in Taxation (MST), Master of Business Administration (MBA), as well as a doctoral program in organizational studies. The school also offers plenty of internship opportunities, as well as joint degree programs in conjunction with Albany Law School. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of accounting, management information systems, as well as human resource information systems.

Admission to the University at Albany's graduate school of business is quite competitive among those who apply; last year, over 696 students applied for admission to the school and approximately 377 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 235 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.35, as well as an average GMAT score of about 560. The admissions committee requires all applicants to have a minimum undergraduate GPA of at least a 2.9, as well as a minimum GMAT score of at least 500. Students are able to begin graduate course work in the fall only, and are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis.

The graduate school of business has 50 full-time faculty members, of whom 96% hold a doctorate degree. The school is also home to 6 part-time faculty members, of whom 60% hold a doctorate. The average graduate business class usually numbers around 30 students, and most faculty members teach an average of 2 courses at any given time.

Placement Services

The school has rather extensive placement services available to both current students and alumni. These services include career counseling, online job listings, resume critiques and referrals, as well as networking events. Over 85% of the most recent graduating class were able to find jobs within three months of receiving their degrees.

"The class are nice and small, which makes having discussions a lot easier."

What's Bad

"Some of the faculty members are difficult to get a hold of outside of class, which is kind of a pain in the neck."

"There is less graduate financial aid than I would like there to be. It isn't very cheap for out of state students."
