The Facts

Syracuse University is a rather large, private institution located in the appropriately titled city of Syracuse, New York. The university has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 15,000 students, however, the graduate School of Management is significantly smaller, and is home to about 400 graduate business students. Approximately 86% of the currently enrolled students have had an average of 5 years of full-time professional experience, a factor taken into serious consideration by the admissions committee when reviewing applications. Perhaps as a result of this fact, the average age of enrollment is around 27, however, ages range from 22 to 48. Approximately 14% of the currently enrolled students entered directly from undergraduate school, while about 5% already have a graduate degree of some sort. The School of Management is perhaps best known for its emphasis on decision making skills as well as for its combination of lecture and group projects. The school offers graduate business degrees in the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Science in Accounting (MSAcc), as well as a doctoral program, as joint degrees in law and business administration (JD/MBA), law and accounting (JD/MSAcc), as well as law and media management (JD/MS). The school also offers several foreign exchange programs, as well as internship opportunities. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of accounting, general management, as well as finance.

Admission to the university's graduate School of Management is extremely competitive among the relatively few students who apply; last year, over 407 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 169 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 64 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.18, as well as an average GMAT score of about 629. The admissions committee requires all applicants to have a minimum undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0, as well as a minimum GMAT score of at least 500. Students are able to begin graduate course work in the fall only, and are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis.

The graduate School of Management has 59 full-time faculty members, all of whom hold a doctorate degree. The school is also home to 15 part-time faculty members, of whom 65% hold a doctorate. The average business class is usually around 35 students, and most faculty members teach an average of 12 credit hours.

Placement Services

The school has rather extensive placement services available to both current students as well as alumni. Some of these services include newsletters, online job listings, and career counseling. Last year, 36 companies were actively recruiting on campus, 58% of which were national corporations. The majors most in demand by these companies included finance, accounting, operations, production, as well as marketing and sales. The average starting salary of the most recent graduating class was around $63,754, however, it ranged from $24,000 to $90,000. Approximately 81% of the same class were able to find jobs within three months of receiving their degrees.

What's Good

"The career services are great; they make finding a job after graduating less overwhelming."

"My professors are all really wonderful; they know how to make the material accessible and applicable to the real-world."

"I like the emphasis on practical experience; internships are practically a requirement."

What's Bad

"Unfortunately, there isn't a huge amount of financial aid available to graduate students."

"Things can get pretty intense and competitive around here; just keep a cool head."

"It's not like we're in the middle of nowhere, but it would be nice to be in a place with more national corporations."
