The Facts

Troy State University Montgomery is a rather small, public coeducational institution located in the city of Montgomery, Alabama with a total undergraduate and graduate enrollement of approximately 4,000. The graduate College of Business is located on the main campus, however, there are several courses offered at Maxwell Airforce Base. The graduate business school is home to over 127 full time students and approximately 84 part-time professional students. The students participate in a one year program geared toward advanced study in management practices for students who have already had some professional experience in professional business administration. The school's average entrance age is 31, which highlights the fact that most students have already had quite a bit of experience in the professional world, however, the ages range widely from 21 all the way up to 65. The MBA program offers the Master of Business Administration, (MBA) the Master of Science in Human Resources Management, (MSHRM) the Master of Science in Public Administration, (MSPA) as well as the Master of Science in Management (MSM). Some of the most popular programs with students include masters in the areas of marketing, as well as human resources management.

Admission to the graduate business school at Troy State is actually quite competitive among the relatively few students who apply. Last year, over 420 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 200 of those students were accepted. Eventually, all 200 of the admitted students enrolled for the coming semester. Some of the requirements for admission include a bachelor's degree with a GPA of at least a 2.5, as well as a minimum GMAT score of 450 and a minimum GRE score of 1000. Applicants are also advised to have a strong mathematics background, as well as a strong sense of motivation and drive to move up in the world of business.

The school has 12 full time faculty members, 83% of whom hold a doctorate, as well as 7 part-time faculty members, 75% of whom hold a doctorate. Students say their professors are extremely helpful and usually available to answer questions. Students also rave about the relatively small class sizes; the average business class is around 23 students.

Placement Services

Unfortunately, the school isn't known for its extensive job placement services after a degree is obtained. Students are basically expected to forge out on their own and make connections by themselves. Fortunately however, most of the students enter the program with several years of professional experience under their belts, making it far easier for them to re-enter successfully into the business world with their already existing connections. Because the program is only one year long, many students' employers encourage them to go through the program, and often finanace their way, as it will only make them more valuable employees when they're through.

What's Good

"The professors are all very experienced and give wonderful advice on how to be more competitive in the job market."

"It's nice to be in class with people that have already had significant experience in the job market. We can bounce ideas off of one another."

"There is a great approach to management here; we pay a lot of attention to strategies that actually have been proven to work."

What's Bad

"There aren't very good placement services after you finish your year in the program."

"There are some professors who seem far more interested in their own careers rather than their students' progress."

"The focus here seems to be more on the undergraduate students."
