The Facts

The University of Alabama at Birmingham's School of Business/ Graduate School of Management is a rather moderately sized, and housed in a public, coeducational institution. The Birmingham campus of the University of Alabama has a total undergraduate and graduate student population of 14,620 students, with a graduate business population of about 400 students. A whopping 89% of the currently enrolled graduate business students have had at least 5 years of professional business experience, and the remaining percentage enter directly from their undergraduate education. The average age of students is 27, however, it ranges from 21 to 55. The school's graduate business program focuses primarily on management development while exposing and educating students in all areas of business. Students are prepared as future business leaders, honing their decision making skills, and international awareness. The Graduate School of Management offer degrees in Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Accounting (MAcc) as well as a doctoral program in administration/ health services, and a joint degree in public health (MBA/MPH), and health administration (MSHA/MBA). Some of the most popular programs with students include finance, information technology management, marketing, as well as ethics.

Admission to the school is fiercely competitive among the students who apply; last year, over 310 students applied for admission to the school and approximately 252 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 210 of those students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.11 as well as an average GMAT score of 548. The admissions committee places strong emphasis on academic accomplishments as well as prior work experience. Ability in mathematics is also a strong factor in determining admissions. MBA candidates are able to begin graduate work in either the spring, summer, or fall, and admission is on a rolling basis.

The school has a staff of 54 full time graduate business faculty, 90% of whom hold a doctorate degree. In addition, there are also 11 part-time faculty members, about 27% of whom hold a doctorate degree. The average business class size is about 40 students, and there is a bit of a shortage of faculty members, as most teach about 6 separate classes.

Placement Services

The school's placement services are a bit limited, however, they are open to all students as well as members of the alumni association for an unlimited number of years after they obtained their degree. Last year, over 25 companies actively recruited on campus, and the degrees most in demand were accounting as well as industrial distribution. Even though the placement services could be better, an impressive 90% of students last year found a job within three months of receiving their degree. Alumni have primarily been placed with national corporations as well as local large enterprises.

What's Good

"The professors here are very dedicated to their students. They want you to succeed and will do whatever they can to make that possible."

"There are plenty of internship opportunities available here, and it's nice to get some hands-on experience."

"There is actually a remarkable lack of competition among students. Everyone seems to want to help each other out."

What's Bad

"The placement services could be better. You can feel a bit left in the lurch sometimes."

"Some of the classes are too large for my liking. It can be tricky to have formative discussions."

"The administration doesn't seem to have any definitive answers."
