The Facts

The University of Connecticut is a rather large, private institution located in the town of Storrs, Connecticut, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 25,370 students. The university's graduate business program, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 864 graduate business students. All of the currently enrolled students have had an average of 6 years of full-time professional experience, a factor taken into serious consideration by the admissions committee when reviewing applications. Perhaps as a result of this fact, the average age of enrollment is around 28, however, ages range from 22 to 57. Approximately 3% of the currently enrolled students enter directly from undergraduate school, while about 11% of the students already have a graduate degree of some sort. The school is perhaps best known for its emphasis on teamwork and problem-solving skills, in order to prepare students for global business leadership. The school offers graduate business degrees in the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Science in Accounting (MSA), as well as a doctoral program in business administration, and joint degrees in law (JD/MBA), social work (MBA/MSW), international studies (MBA/MA), medicine (MD/MBA), nursing (MBA/MS), management (MBA/MIM), as well as accounting (MBA/MS). The school also offers internship and work-study opportunities, as well as foreign exchange partnerships in two countries. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of finance, health care management, information technology, management consulting, as well as interactive marketing.

Admission to the university's graduate business program is quite competitive among those who apply; last year, over 200 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 125 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 63 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.44, as well as an average GMAT score of about 628. The admissions committee requires all applicants to have a minimum undergraduate GPA of at least a 3.0, as well as a minimum GMAT score of at least 560. Students are able to begin their graduate course work in the fall only, and are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis.

The graduate business program has 102 full-time faculty members, of whom 92% hold a doctorate degree. The school is also home to 37 part-time faculty members, of whom 74% hold a doctorate. The average graduate business class usually numbers around 27 students, and most faculty members teach an average of 4 courses at any given time.

 

Placement Services

The school has rather extensive placement services; last year, 23 companies were actively recruiting on campus, 87% of which were national corporations. The majors most in demand by these companies included finance, information technology, as well as health systems management. The average starting salary of the most recent graduating class was around $69,000, however, it ranged from $52,000 to $90,000. Over 73% of the same graduating class were able to find jobs within three months of obtaining their degree.
