The Facts

The University of Hartford is a rather moderately-sized, private institution located in the city of Hartford, Connecticut, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 6,844 students. The university's graduate business program, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 435 graduate business students. Approximately 86% of the currently enrolled students have had an average of 5 years of full-time professional experience, a factor taken into serious consideration by the admissions committee when reviewing applications. Perhaps as a result of this fact, the average age of enrollment is around 28, however, ages range from 21 to 57. Approximately 18% of the currently enrolled students enter directly from undergraduate school, while about 15% of the students already have a graduate degree of some sort. The school is perhaps best known for its emphasis on diversity of methods, all of which include active participation and group work on the students' part. The school offers graduate business degrees in the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Science in Accounting and Taxation (MSAT), Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA), as well as a joint degree in engineering and business (MBA/MSE). The school also offers internship and work-study opportunities throughout the community. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of finance, management, as well as marketing.

Admission to the university's graduate business program is fairly competitive among those who apply; last year, over 193 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 127 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 102 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.2 as well as an average GMAT score of about 530. The admissions committee requires all applicants to have a minimum undergraduate GPA of at least a 2.5, as well as a minimum GMAT score of at least 450. Students are able to begin their graduate course work in the fall, spring, or summer, and are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis.

The graduate business program has 37 full-time faculty members, of whom 97% hold a doctorate degree. The school is also home to 24 part-time faculty members, of whom 7% hold a doctorate. The average graduate business class usually numbers around 14 students, and most faculty members teach an average of 9 credit hours at any given time.

Placement Services

The school has rather extensive placement services; last year, over 20 companies were actively recruiting on campus, 50% of which were national corporations. The majors most in demand by these companies included accounting, as well as finance. The average starting salary of the most recent graduating class was around $45,000, however, it ranged from $20,000 to $65,000. Over 92% of the same graduating class were able to find jobs within three months of receiving their degrees.
