The Facts

The University of New Haven is a rather small, private institution located in the town of West Haven, Connecticut, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 4,330 students. The university's graduate business program, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 586 graduate business students. Approximately 78% of the currently enrolled students have had an average of 4 to 5 years of full-time professional experience, a factor taken into serious consideration by the admissions committee when reviewing applications. Perhaps as a result of this fact, the average age of enrollment is around 26, however, ages range from 22 to 55. Approximately 5% of the currently enrolled students entered directly from undergraduate school, while about 10% of the students already have a graduate degree of some sort. The school is perhaps best known for its emphasis on the intermingling of case study and theory, in order for students to have a foundational and practical grasp on business practices. The school offers graduate business degrees in the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Public Administration (MPA), Master of Science in Health Care Administration (MS), Master of Science in Labor Relations (MS), Master of Science in Management of Sports Industries (MS), as well as joint degrees in industrial engineering (MBA/MS), and an MBA/MPA. The school also offers internship and work-study opportunities throughout the community, as well as several interdisciplinary programs. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of finance, management, marketing, as well as international business.

Admission to the university's graduate business program is quite competitive among those who apply; last year, over 320 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 255 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 145 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.0, as well as an average GMAT score of about 475. The admissions committee requires all applicants to have a minimum undergraduate GPA of at least a 2.5, as well as a minimum GMAT score of at least 400. Students are able to begin their graduate course work in the fall, winter, spring, or summer, and are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis.

The graduate business program has 45 full-time faculty members, of whom 91% hold a doctorate degree; there is no part-time faculty. The average graduate business class usually numbers around 21 students, and most faculty members teach an average of 5 courses at any given time.

Placement Services

The school has rather limited placement services, as most students are already fully employed when they enroll. The services that are available, however, are available to both current students and alumni for an unlimited amount of time after obtaining their degree. Some of these services include online job listings, career counseling, as well as resume critique.

What's Good

"There are some really great internships available, and I think they're the most valuable learning experiences you can have."

"The classes are really small, and discussion based, which I much prefer to lecture courses."

"The professors are extremely dedicated to the school, and are often more than willing to spend time with you outside of class explaining things."

What's Bad

"There isn't any on campus graduate housing available, which is a pain in the neck."

"I wish there was more financial aid available. It's a private university, so it isn't cheap."

"People do get pretty intensely competitive here. It can really get to you after awhile."
