The Facts

The University of North Alabama is a rather small, public institution located in the town of Florence, Alabama, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 5,300 students. The university's graduate College of Business, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 95 graduate business students. Approximately 80% of the currently enrolled students have had an average of about 5 years of full-time professional experience, a factor taken into serious consideration by the admissions committee when reviewing applications. Perhaps as a result of this fact, the average age of enrollment is around 33, however, ages range from 20 to 55. Approximately 20% of the currently enrolled students enter directly from undergraduate school, while about 3% of the students already have a graduate degree of some sort. The university's graduate business program is perhaps best known for its integration of theory and more practical methods to train students for a global business environment. The school offers graduate business degrees in the Master of Business Administration (MBA) only, however, there are internship and work-study opportunities available throughout the community. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of management, finance, accounting, decision theory, information systems management, corporate policy, economics, as well as entrepreneurship.

Admission to the University of North Alabama's graduate business program is fairly competitive among the relatively few students who apply; last year, over 60 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 45 of those students were admitted. Eventually however, only about 30 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.2, as well as an average GMAT score of about 410. The admissions committee requires all students to have a minimum undergraduate GPA of at least a 2.0, as well as a minimum GMAT score of at least 350. Students are able to begin graduate course work in the fall, spring, or summer, and are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis.

The graduate business program has 20 full-time faculty members, of whom 86% hold a doctorate degree; there are no part-time faculty members. The average graduate business class is usually around 26 students, and most faculty members teach an average of 9 credit hours at any given time.

Placement Services

The school has rather extensive placement services that are available to both current students and alumni for an unlimited amount of time after obtaining their degree. Some of these services include career counseling, resume referral and critiques, mock interviews, networking events, graduate seminars, as well as online job listings.

What's Good

"The program is nice and small, and all of the professors are there full-time, so there's a nice community feel to everything."

"I really like how the theory and practicality are combined; you get a sense of how to use all the jargon in the real-world."

"There usually seems to be a good amount of on campus graduate housing."

What's Bad

"There is hardly any graduate financial aid available. It all goes to the undergraduates."

"Because there are so few students, things tend to become unnecessarily competitive."

"I wish there were more degree options available. You can only obtain the MBA, and nothing else."
