The Facts

The University of San Francisco is a rather moderately sized, private institution located in the city of San Francisco, California, and is affiliated with the Jesuits. The university has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 7,610 students, however, the Graduate School of Management is significantly smaller, and is home to approximately 500 graduate business students. About 90% of the currently enrolled students have had an average of 4 to 5 years of full-time professional experience, a factor taken into serious consideration by the admissions committee when reviewing applications. Perhaps as a result of this fact, the average age of enrollment is around 25, however, ages range from 22 to 36. Approximately 10% of currently enrolled students entered directly from undergraduate school, while about 5% of students already have a graduate degree of some sort. The university's Graduate School of Management is perhaps best known for it's innovative use of computer simulations and group case studies to prepare students for high-level management roles in a global marketplace. The school offers graduate business degrees in the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA), Executive Master of Management and Disability Services (EMMDS), Professional Master of Business Administration (PMBA), as well as joint degrees in law (JD/MBA), nursing (MSN/MBA), as well as Asian Pacific Studies (MAPS/MBA). The school also offers a foreign exchange program with China, as well as plenty of work-study and internship opportunities. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of finance, marketing, management, as well as international business.

Admission to USF's Graduate School of Management is quite competitive among those who apply; last year, over 512 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 410 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 145 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.2 and an average GMAT score of about 559. The admissions committee requires applicants to have a minimum undergraduate GPA of at least a 3.0, as well as a minimum GMAT score of at least 500. Students are able to begin graduate course work in the fall, spring, or summer, and are notified of their admission status on a rolling basis.

The school has 48 full-time faculty members, of whom 98% hold a doctorate degree. The school is also home to 48 part-time faculty members, of whom 98% also hold a doctorate. The average graduate business class numbers around 22 students, and most faculty members teach an average of 6 courses at any given time.

Placement Services

The school has extensive placement services through its Career Center including online job postings, networking events, career development services, and recruiting events. The services are open to alumni for a nominal yearly fee.

What's Good

"The location is great; you're right in the middle of San Francisco, where there are a lot of really exciting things happening in the business world."

"The professors are excellent, and they really care about you, which is a bonus."

"The atmosphere of the school is very conducive to support and learning from one another. I don't find the people to be totally ruthless and competitive."

What's Bad

"Unless you're already a CEO or something, San Francisco is a very expensive place to live."

"Some of the requirements we have to complete are very broad, and feel like things I've already gone over."

"Sure, there are a lot of internship opportunities and things in that vein, but who has time with all this work the faculty gives you?"
