The Facts

The University of South Alabama is a rather large, public institution located in the town of Mobile, Alabama, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 12,510 students. The university's graduate Mitchell College of Business, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 153 graduate business students. Approximately 80% of the currently enrolled students have had an average of 5 years of full-time professional experience, a factor taken into serious consideration by the admissions committee when reviewing applications. Perhaps as a result of this fact, the average age of enrollment is around 28, however, ages range from 22 to 56. Approximately 20% of the currently enrolled students entered directly from undergraduate school, while about 4% of the students already have a graduate degree of some sort. The university's graduate business program is perhaps best known for its wide range of education methods, which range from traditional lectures to more experimental forms. The school offers graduate business degrees in the Master of Business Administration (MBA), as well as the Master of Accounting (MAcc). The school also offers internship and work-study opportunities, as well as cooperative programs and several foreign exchange partnerships. Some of the most popular programs include courses in the areas of management, accounting, finance, marketing, as well as economics.

Admission to the university's graduate business program is fairly competitive among the relatively few students who apply; last year, over 140 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 94 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 74 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.4, as well as an average GMAT score of about 480. The admissions committee requires all applicants to have a minimum undergraduate GPA of at least a 3.0, as well as a minimum GMAT score of at least 400. Students are able to begin their graduate course work in the fall, spring, or summer, and are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis.

The university's graduate business program has 32 full-time faculty members, of whom 68% hold a doctorate degree. The program is also home to 20 part-time faculty members, of whom 30% hold a doctorate. The average graduate business class usually numbers around 20 students, and most professors teach an average of 6 courses at any given time.

Placement Services

The school has rather extensive placement services; last year, 10 companies were actively recruiting on campus, 5% of which were national corporations. The majors most in demand by these companies included marketing, management, as well as accounting. The average starting salary of the most recent graduating class was around $40,250, however, it ranged from $22,500 to $58,000. Over 75% of the same class were able to find jobs within three months of receiving their graduate degrees.

What's Good

"The program is small enough that everyone is well acquainted, which is a nice way to be."

"The professors are quite dedicated to this place; it makes you want to work harder for them."

"The career services are great. They will work with you until you're totally satisfied."

What's Bad

"Things do get kind of competitive around here, particularly when it comes to recruiting."

"The administration seems a lot more focused on the undergraduates, unfortunately."

"There isn't very much on campus graduate housing available."
