The Facts
Grand View College is a small, private institution located in the city of Des Moines, Iowa, and is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The school is home to over 1,200 undergraduate students and approximately 450 graduate and part-time professional students who are able to take courses in both the liberal arts and sciences and preprofessional studies. The academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of biological science, business, (a popular program with majors ranging from management to accounting) communications and the arts, (home to wonderful programs in broadcasting, journalism, as well as the visual and performing arts) computer and physical science, education, health professions, (which only offers a program in nursing) as well as the social sciences. Grand View College offers its students a fairly wide range of majors in both the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies, however, some of the most popular with students include majors in the areas of art, nursing, education, as well as business.
Admission to Grand View College is not particularly competitive; however, the number of qualified students who apply has been increasing with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 440 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 414 of those students were accepted; of those, about 160 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 990 to 1030, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 20 to 26. Additionally, more than 50% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.6.
Grand View College has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 15:1, and most students agree that the small classes are one of the best parts of the school. In fact, it is very rare to find a course at any level with more than 15 students. Most classes are discussion based, and the professors make sure that every student is able to have their voice heard. The professors themselves get very high marks from students in terms of accessibility and willingness to help students out when they may need it.
The Social Scene
The city of Des Moines offers students plenty of entertainment and social options, including restaurants, bars, clubs, museums, concerts; pretty much everything you’d expect from a moderately sized city. Most students do own cars, because public transportation in the city isn’t very efficient; students in all years are permitted to have cars on campus for a nominal yearly fee. The college has no fraternities or sororities, and most students seem to prefer it that way. Most students would rather hang out in small groups or explore Des Moines rather than party their weekends away. The administration also has a strict dry policy, making kegging nearly impossible.
The dating scene may not be the most diverse, but it certainly is one of the most good looking!
What’s Good
“Des Moines is a great city that doesn’t usually get enough recognition. There’s a lot to do here!”
“The professors are just incredible. I’ve stayed in contact with many of them long after I took their class.”
“The students are really nice, and the school is small enough that you know just about everyone.”
What’s Bad
“It’s completely impossible to have a party on campus; the administration watches your every move.”
“Des Moines isn’t the worst place to go to school, but after awhile, you’re doing the same things over and over again.”
“I hate knowing everybody at this school. A little bit of anonymity from time to time would be nice.”
