Guilford College Undergraduate Program
Guilford College Application
The Facts
Guilford College is a small, private liberal arts college located in the town of Greensboro, North Carolina that is associated with the Quaker church. The college is home to over 1,700 undergraduate students that receive a strong and communal liberal arts education with a unique emphasis on community and public service. The school offers its students more than 30 majors in a wide variety of subjects, including unique interdisciplinary programs such as Quaker studies, peace and conflict resolution studies, forensic anthropology, and applied ethics. Some of the most popular majors include business management, psychology, English, elementary education, and computer information systems.
Admission to Guilford College is not terrifically competitive numerically; however, those students who do apply often exhibit a strong drive and personal motivation. Last year, over 1,700 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 1,140 students were accepted; of those, about 300 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1020 to 1270, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 21 to 26. Additionally, over 38% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.06.
Guilford College has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 16:1, and the professors are given high marks for accessibility and for genuinely caring about their students. The administration is also known for looking after the freshmen students to ensure that their first year is as comfortable and smooth as possible. Another note: the school has a terrific co-op internship program that gives students credit for independent projects completed in conjunction with the internship.
The Social Scene
The town of Greensboro, North Carolina doesn't really offer students much in the way of excitement, but this isn't really an issue. Most Guilford students would rather spend their time hanging out on campus with small groups of friends or participating in one of the school's many student-run clubs and organizations such as the Model UN, or the pagan mysticism club. Since there are no fraternities or sororities at the school, partying isn't really a big deal, and most Guilford students aren't really wild party animals anyway.
Sports, however, are a big deal at the school, and the Guilford Quakers are a member of the NCAA Division III level. The men's golf team has been particularly successful in recent years, and basketball, volleyball, and lacrosse are also popular sports. There are some great intramural sports as well, including ultimate frisbee and rugby.
The dating scene is pretty tame, but we hear there are a lot of interesting folks to meet at Guilford ...

What’s Bad
“Sometimes the whole friendly thing can get a bit overwhelming. People sometimes come off as saccharine.”
“There isn't really anything to do off-campus, and it's easy to get pretty stir-crazy here.”
“The party scene is nonexistent. It's hard to find a release from all the academics.”
