The Facts
The University of Hartford is a moderately sized, private institution, located just north of the city of Hartford, Connecticut, and is home to over 5,000 undergraduate students and approximately 3,000 graduate and part-time professional students. The school was founded in 1877, and since then, it has been a draw for students from all over the East coast and beyond. The university is perhaps best known for its extensive Museum of American Political Life. The University of Hartford is divided up into several smaller undergraduate and graduate colleges, including schools of biological science, business, communications and the arts, computer and physical science, education, engineering and environmental design, health professions, and social sciences. The school offers some very unique majors including studies in audio technology, jazz, printmaking, respiratory therapy, and a very popular criminal justice program. Other popular majors include computer science, engineering, physical therapy, communication, psychology, and elementary education.
Admission to the University of Hartford is fairly competitive, and the total number of applicants has been steadily increasing with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, more than 12,000 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 7,700 of those students were accepted; of those, about 1,500 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1030 to 1100, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 21 to 25. Additionally, more than 48% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.6.
The University of Hartford has a very manageable student to teacher ratio of 14:1, and many students agree that the relatively small class sizes are one of the best parts of attending the school. Like many schools, even the ones with some of the best student to faculty ratios, some of the general education classes can be quite large and held in large lectures; however, the majority of the classes are rarely above 20 students.
The Social Scene
Despite its name, the University of Hartford isn’t really in the city of Hartford, per se. It is located just outside to the north, but public transportation makes it easy for U of H students to get into the city quite frequently. Many students also own cars, which makes it much easier to take advantage of Hartford’s nightlife, as the buses stop running after a certain hour of the night. There are also several Greek houses at the school, but they don’t really dictate the on-campus social life. Instead, the non-Greek students organize many events such as concerts and all-school parties and dances, and run various clubs and organizations.
The dating scene may not be incredibly diverse, but we hear that U of H students are some of the nicest and most attractive around...
What's Good
“The school is private, but you don’t get the feeling that people think they are better just for that reason. Everyone is really nice and low key here.”
“The classes are really engaging without being ridiculously demanding. The teachers expect a lot of you, but they aren’t unrealistic.”
“Hartford is a great city, and it’s nice to be able to escape there for a night on the town with my friends.”
What’s Bad
“If you don’t have a car, it’s really difficult to do anything here. We’re too far outside of Hartford to walk there, and the buses aren’t very reliable.”
“People tend to be a little group-oriented here. The groups don’t really tend to mingle.”
“The dorms are soooo tiny. You can barely get to your bed.”
