Hendrix College

Hendrix College Admission
Hendrix College Undergraduate Program
Hendrix College Application

The Facts

Hendrix College is a small liberal arts and sciences college associated with the Methodist Church. The school, located in the town of Conway, Arkansas is home to over 1,030 undergraduate students and a meager nine graduate students. Hendrix offers its students the chance to design their own curriculum and interdisciplinary major working in close conjunction with a faculty member. The college has a terrific theater program, as well as top- notch biology and psychology programs.

Hendrix students are offered over 27 majors in a wide array of subjects, which are often interdisciplinary and preprofessionally focused; some of the most popular choices include psychology, biology, English, economics, business, and history.

Admission to Hendrix College is not terrifically competitive numerically; however, the student who do apply often exhibit strong self-motivation and a willingness to succeed in the real world. Last year, over 900 students applied to the school for admission, and approximately 770 of those students were accepted; of those, about 270 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1140 to 1350, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 24 to 30. Additionally, over 64% of those admitted were ranked in top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.6.

Hendrix College has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 12:1, and students love the fact that T.A.'s never teach any classes. Even first year students get attention and teaching from some of the school's top professors. The classes are usually held in small groups, often in discussion format or in a hands-on lab setting. In a sense, the students at Hendrix really have the ball, and control much of the policy at the school.

The Social Scene

The town of Conway, Arkansas doesn't offer students much in the way of social life and entertainment; for starters, the county is “dry,” which means there are no bars, and strict policies exist on the selling of alcohol.

Most students rely on campus activities to have some fun, and even though there are no fraternities or sororities on campus, students seem to be quite pleased with creating their own parties. In fact, the students actually have a celebration each year of the absence of Greek organizations at the school. If you are a former or aspiring Greek, the message is simple; don't come here! Sports aren't really popular either, and most students are way too busy studying to have much time for athletics. The school is big on community service, and actually has a week-long fundraising spree where students come up with unique and often very fun ways to raise money for various good causes.

The dating scene is what you make of it; there are some great catches if you can get them out of the library.

What’s Good

“The flexibility within the curriculum is really great; it lets you get what you want out of your education.”

“Everyone here is liberal and open-minded which makes discussions really dynamic easy-going at the same time.”

“The campus is gorgeous, and you can easily find some quiet space to relax.”

What’s Bad

“The school is just too small. Everyone knows everyone else's business, and it can get kind of stifling.”

“There are no sports here, and you have to just go running or something for exercise.”

“I wish there were more majors here. It's hard to find really specific preprofessional programs here.”
