The Facts
Hofstra University is a moderately sized private school located in the town of Hempstead, New York on Long Island. It is home to approximately 8,323 undergraduate students and about 3,834 graduate students. The school used to be a commuter school at its inception, but now it has developed into a residential university in its own right. It is made up of several smaller schools with preprofessional emphasis including the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Frank G. Zarb School of Business, the School of Communication, the School of Education and Allied Human Services, the New College, the School of Law, the School for University Studies, the Honors College, the Saturday College (which sounds easier than it is...) and the University College for Continuing Education. As you can see, students are not in danger of their area of interest being overlooked. In fact, the school offers around 130 majors, the most popular being psychology, marketing, accounting, management and finance.
Admission requirements to Hofstra have grown increasingly tough over the years. Last year approximately 11,691 students applied to the school and 8,000 were admitted; of those, 1,877 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1030 to 1220 and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 22 to 27. Over 43% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of 3.08.
The student to teacher ratio is 14:1, and students say that teachers make themselves quite available, with some exceptions. Of course, introductory classes are generally pretty large, but most of the other classes are quite a bit smaller and primarily discussion-based.
The Social Scene
Hofstra has a gorgeous campus that is often the primary reason students choose to go to the school. It is actually a member of the American Association of Botanical Gardens, and is filled with beautifully kept gardens and small parks. Another perk is that the school is only about 25 miles from New York City, which makes the school perfect for people who love urban life, but wouldn’t actually want to live in a city like New York .
The school definitely has its share of fraternities and sororities, and they make the party scene what it is. Drinking is most definitely a popular activity both on and off campus, and happens nearly every night of the week. The surrounding town of Hempstead is mostly residential and quite pricey at that, so students tend to create their own fun on campus, usually in the form of parties. However, sports are a really big deal at Hofstra, and the football team, the Dutchmen, have been quite successful in recent years.
A few years ago, Playboy magazine rated Hofstra as one of the top three colleges in terms of the hotness of the girls. We would expect there are guys to match, so don’t worry ladies!
What's Good
“The school is just small enough to give it a very “East Coasty” feel, and the campus itself is just gorgeous.”
“New York City is so close, and you can go there often without having to get all stressed out.”
“There is always a party happening to get your mind off of class. It helps to relieve tension, and keeps everyone pretty chill.”
What's Bad
“There are a lot of fake-and-bakers here who still think they are sophomores in high school. It’s annoying for those of us who actually act our age and care about learning.”
“The dorms are hard to come by. The school keeps admitting too many students, so there is always a lack of housing.”
“The frats and sororities are way too full of themselves. They think everyone who isn’t involved is a total dork.”
