Indiana Institute of Technology Application
The Facts
The Indiana Institute of Technology is a rather small, private school located in the town of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and is home to just under 2,000 undergraduate students and approximately 2,100 graduate and part-time professional students. These students are able to take courses in one of the institute’s two undergraduate schools or the graduate schools, which offer programs in the areas of business, engineering, and computer science. These academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of business (a popular program that includes majors in both accounting and sports management), computer and physical science (home to an innovative program in web services), engineering and environmental design (a diverse program offering everything from industrial engineering, and the social sciences. Some of the most popular majors are in the areas of engineering, computer science, and business administration.
Admission to the Indiana Institute of Technology is indeed competitive, and many qualified and specialized students apply from out of state. Last year, over 3,340 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 1,830 of those students were accepted; of those, about 245 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1000 to 1050, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 21 to 28. Additionally, more than 60% of those admitted were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.58.
The Indiana Institute of Technology has a student to faculty ratio of 25:1, which isn’t terrific, considering the size of the school, as well as the fact that it’s highly specialized. However, many of the professors do double or triple duty to keep the classes small, so that students are able to do the important hands-on work and research integral to many of their majors. The professors are dedicated, although they often are working professionals, which occasionally takes them away from the classroom.
The Social Scene
The town of Fort Wayne is a burgeoning small city, and while it may not be terrifically cosmopolitan, it does offer concerts, movies, museums, and even a symphony orchestra and an opera company. The larger, more developed city of Chicago is only about 150 miles away, and many students choose to venture into the city on the weekends. The Indiana Institute of Technology is home to five local and national fraternities and sororities, and while a fairly large percentage of students join a Greek organization at some point or another, they don't really influence on-campus social life to a noticeable degree.
The dating scene is an interesting one; there are a lot of people who were geeks in high school, but now, well, let’s just say they’re quite attractive at this point...
What’s Good
“I love that there are so many really specific majors here that are tailored right to your interests.”
“People here are really laid back and friendly. There’s not really a sense of having to compete with one another.”
“Fort Wayne is a surprisingly wonderful place. There are plenty of things to do, and most importantly, people are friendly.”
What’s Bad
“Things can get pretty boring around here. If you don’t have a car, you can say goodbye to a real social life.”
“The dorms could use some work, and there just aren’t enough for everyone.”
“The administration is a little iffy when it comes to financial aid. That’s quite annoying.”
