The Facts

Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne is basically a conglomeration of the two titular universities, and has become a public, state-controlled institution with several campuses throughout the state. This particular campus is, obviously, located in the town of Fort Wayne, and is home to over 6,000 undergraduate students and approximately 4,000 graduate and part-time professional students. The students are able to take courses in one of the university’s nine undergraduate or five graduate schools, which offer programs in the areas of liberal arts, science, business, education, health sciences, engineering, technology, and public affairs. These academic divisions offer a wide array of majors in the areas of biological science, business, communications and the arts, computer and physical science (which includes popular programs in geology and earth science), education, engineering and environmental design, health professions, and social sciences. Indiana U-Purdue U Fort Wayne offers its students a wide range of majors in both the liberal arts and preprofessional studies; some of the most popular choices include engineering, business, and education.

Admission to Indiana U-Purdue U Fort Wayne is not competitive; however, more and more qualified students apply with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 2,500 students applied for admission to the school and approximately 2,400 of those students were accepted; of those, about 1,645 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 980 to 1020, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 20 to 26. Additionally, more than 50% of those admitted were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.56.

Indiana U-Purdue U Fort Wayne has a manageable student to faculty ratio of 18:1, and while many of the general education and introductory courses are held in lecture halls, they are usually supplemented by significantly smaller seminar classes in which the students get a chance to discuss the content of the previous lecture. The faculty gets high marks for accessibility and willingness to help students out; it is apparent that they enjoy their jobs.

The Social Scene

The town of Fort Wayne is really more of burgeoning city; although it may not be fabulously cosmopolitan, it certainly offers students plenty to do including concerts, movie theaters, malls, restaurants, and coffee shops. Also, the city of Indianapolis is about two hours away by car, and many students head into the larger city on the weekends to take advantage of its more plentiful offerings. The university is home to four local fraternities and sororities which are quite popular with students, and basically govern the on-campus social scene. The Greeks throw popular parties on the weekends that are well attended, and where drinking (usually from kegs...) is the most popular social activity.

The dating scene may not be terrifically diverse, but there are plenty of other schools in the area that students often mingle with...

What’s Good

“Even though this is a state school, it is relatively small, with a real sense of community.”

“I really life Fort Wayne. Everyone is really welcoming to students, and extremely friendly.”

“The school provides you with plenty of internship opportunities, which is great to get your career going.”

What’s Bad

“I think our on-campus social life is kind of lame. The administration needs to make an effort to provide us with more things to do.”

“Once you’ve seen one thing in this town, you’ve seen it all. It gets pretty boring after awhile.”

“Some of the general education classes are just way too big. You feel totally anonymous.”
