The Facts
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis is basically a state-controlled, public conglomeration of the two titular universities with several campuses scattered throughout the state. This particular campus is, obviously, located in the city of Indianapolis, Indiana, and is home to over 13,000 undergraduate students and approximately 12,000 graduate and part-time professional students. The students are able to take courses in one of the university’s undergraduate or graduate schools, which offer academic programs in the areas of arts and sciences, business, education, engineering and technology, health science, religious studies, and professional training. These academic divisions offer a wide array of majors in the areas of biological science, business (which includes a hard-to-find program in office supervision and management), communications and the arts (home to a unique program in American Sign Language), computer and physical science, education, engineering and environmental design (which has an innovative program in biomedical technologies), health professions (a large and diverse program with everything from clinical science to respiratory therapy), and social sciences. Some of the most popular majors include engineering, technology, nursing, and education.
Admission to Indiana U-Purdue U Indianapolis isn’t competitive; however, more and more qualified students apply with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 6,000 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 5,800 of those students were accepted; of those, about 3,500 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 980 to 1030, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 20 to 26. Additionally, more than 55% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.57.
IUPU Indianapolis has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 17:1, and while many of their general education and introductory courses are held in large lecture halls, they are usually supplemented by a significantly smaller seminar class where students get the chance to discuss the content of the previous lecture.
The Social Scene
The city of Indianapolis is quite cosmopolitan and thus offers students quite a bit in the way of entertainment, including concerts, museums, bars, clubs, restaurants, and shopping. The school’s on-campus life is quite active as well; the university is home to five national fraternities and sororities that many students join at some point in their college careers. The Greeks often host very popular weekend parties at which drinking is definitely the most popular activity.
The dating scene offers plenty to choose from... just keep your eyes peeled, and you’re bound to spot a real looker...
What’s Good
“I really like being right in the middle of Indianapolis. It makes a lot of things available to you.”
“The people at this school are great, and the administration is surprisingly personable.”
“The professors obviously like what they’re doing, because they really make an effort to make class engaging.”
What’s Bad
“The whole weekend party scene can get kind of out of hand; people just get drunk on campus rather than going out and exploring the city.”
“There are way too many general education requirements. It seems impossible to get everything done in four years.”
“I really wish our campus had more diversity. It’s pretty homogenous.”
