The Facts
Indiana University Bloomington is the largest branch of the entire Indiana University system which has 8 campuses scattered throughout the state. This particular campus is located in the town of Bloomington, Indiana, and is home to over 28,000 undergraduate students and approximately 12,000 graduate and part-time professional students. The students are able to take courses in the areas of arts and sciences, allied health sciences, business, dentistry, education, health, physical education, recreation, journalism, music, nursing, optometry, public and environmental affairs, social work, and informatics. Theses academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of agriculture, biological science (which includes a terrific program in nutrition), business (a large program that contains majors as diverse as apparel and accessories marketing and operations research), communications and the arts (which has a terrific program in the performing arts, including excellent divisions in voice and ballet), computer and physical science, education, engineering and environmental design (home to a great aerospace studies program), health professions, and social sciences. Indiana University Bloomington offers its students a staggering number of majors to choose from in both the liberal arts and preprofessional studies; some of the most popular choices include fine arts, communications, business administration, public health, and engineering.
Admission to Indiana University Bloomington is somewhat competitive, relative to its satellite schools throughout the state. Last year, over 12,000 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 10,000 of those students were admitted; of those, about 8,500 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1210 to 1300, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 24 to 32. Additionally, more than 86% of those admitted were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.87.
Indiana University Bloomington has a pretty high student to faculty ratio of 20:1, and while most general education courses are held in large lectures, they are usually supplemented by a significantly smaller seminar class where students are able to discuss the content of the previous lecture.
The Social Scene
The town of Bloomington is quite small, and quaint though it may be, it doesn’t really offer students very much in the way of entertainment. However, the city of Indianapolis is only about an hour’s drive away, and many students head into the city on the weekends to take advantage of the more urban environment. The university is home to several fraternities and sororities (most are national) which are extremely popular with students. In fact, over 20% of the student body joins a fraternity or sorority at some point during their academic career. The parties the Greeks throw on the weekends are always pretty wild, and at these soirees, drinking is, without a doubt, the most popular activity.
The dating scene may not be your idea of stereotypically romantic... how about a lovely, candlelit keg party? Anyone? Anyone?
What’s Good
“I really love the party scene here. There’s always something going on to take your mind off the stresses of the academic week.”
“The facilities here are state-of-the-art, particularly if your major involves a lot of research and lab work.”
“The people here are surprisingly inclusive for such a large school. You immediately feel welcomed.”
What’s Bad
“I think the partying thing has gotten way too out of control. People just go biserk on the weekends.”
“There are so many initial requirements to fulfill that it takes forever to even get to your major.”
“If you want to get off campus, there is nothing to do. And I mean nothing.”
