Indiana University East Undergraduate Program
Indiana University East Application
The Facts
Indiana University East is a rather small branch of the larger Indiana University system which includes 8 campuses throughout the state. This particular campus is located in the town of Richmond, Indiana, and is home to over 2,000 undergraduate students and approximately 2,000 graduate and part-time professional students. The students are able to take courses in both the liberal arts and preprofessional studies in the areas of the humanities, natural sciences, math, behavioral and social science, education, business and technology, nursing, public and environmental affairs, social work, and continuing studies. These academic divisions offer a wide array of majors in the areas of biological sciences, business, communications and the arts (a small program with a terrific English department), computer and physical science, education, health professions (which only consists of a popular nursing program), and social sciences. Some of the most popular majors include nursing, business, and education.
Admission to Indiana University East is not very competitive; however, more and more students are applying with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 600 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 560 of those students were admitted; of those, about 430 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 860 to 1000 and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 19 to 24. Additionally, more than 43% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.5.
Indiana University East has a manageable student to faculty ratio of 19:1, although there are many other state schools of comparable size that manage to keep their numbers significantly lower. While some of the general education and introductory courses are held in lecture halls, they are usually supplemented by a seminar course where students are able to discuss the content of the previous lecture. Some students complain that their professors don’t seem interested in assisting students, but there are also students who rave about the personability of their teachers.
The Social Scene
The town of Richmond is quite small, and doesn’t really offer students much in the way of entertainment besides a local movie theater and some strip malls. However, Indianapolis is only about 70 miles away, and many students head there on the weekends. Indiana University East is home to two national fraternities and sororities, which limits the amount of students that are able to join; however, they do throw weekend bashes that are very popular with the entire student body, especially since there isn’t much else to do.
The dating scene isn’t terribly diverse, but we hear the students are as nice as people can be...
What’s Good
“I love that we have all the resources of a state university, but in a small, comfortable setting.”
“The parties thrown here are awesome. They more than make up for the lack of things to do off campus.”
“If you have a car, you can pop into Indianapolis or even Dayton, Ohio on the weekends.”
What’s Bad
“There is nothing to do here! I get extremely stir-crazy about a week into each semester.”
“If you don’t have a car, you’re screwed. Enough said.”
“I think if we had more of a Greek life here, things would liven up a bit.”
