Indiana University Kokomo Application
The Facts
Indiana University, Kokomo is a rather small branch of the large Indiana University system which includes eight campuses throughout the state. This particular branch is located in the small town of Kokomo, Indiana, and is home to over 1,600 undergraduate students and approximately 1,800 graduate and part-time professional students. The students are able to take courses within the liberal arts, business, education, and nursing. These academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of biological science, business (which includes a unique program in electronic business as well as labor studies), communications and the arts, computer and physical science, health professions (home to an innovative and unique program in cytotechnology, as well as nuclear medical technology), education, and the social sciences. Some of the most popular majors are education, business, and nursing.
Admission to Indiana University Kokomo is not terrifically competitive, but the number of applicants has been increasing with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 620 tudents applied for admission to the school, and approximately 590 of those students were accepted; of those, about 300 matriculated . The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 930 to 1010, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 19 to 24. Additionally, more than 38% of those admitted were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.4.
Indiana University Kokomo has a rather manageable student to faculty ratio of 17:1, and while some of the general education and introductory courses are held in lecture halls, it is rare to find upper-level courses with more than 20 students. In general, students give their professors high marks in terms of accessibility and willingness to help students out; however, students do say that some of their professors seem more interested in their own careers than in the well-being of their students.
The Social Scene
The town of Kokomo is quite small and family-oriented, and therefore doesn’t really offer much in the way of entertainment for students; however, the city of Dayton, Ohio is only about 40 miles away, and the city of Indianapolis is about 70 miles from campus. Students who own cars (and most are commuters, so they naturally do) often head into one of the cities on the weekends to take advantage of the more active social life there. Indiana University Kokomo has no fraternities or sororities; however, the school does have over 22 student groups and organizations that run the gamut from a chorale to a student government.
The dating scene is rather homogenous and limited in scope, but people here are just plain nice, and often, just plain cute...
What’s Good
“I really like the amount of majors offered, and the administration encourages you to explore all your options before declaring a major.”
“The people at this school are just really laid back and nice. It’s a no-pressure environment.”
“I like not being in an urban center. It really helps you to focus on your studies without distractions all the time.”
What’s Bad
“There is nothing to do in Kokomo! AHhhhhHH!”
“I really wish we had some fraternities and sororities. I think it would spice up the nearly nonexistent social life to some extent.”
“People here are a bit too laid back for my tastes. It’s like they think they can just coast right through.”
