Indiana University of Pennsylvania Application
The Facts
Indiana University of Pennsylvania is a fairly large, public university located in the town of Indiana, Pennsylvania (not to be confused with the state...), and is home to over 11,200 undergraduate students, and approximately 1,800 graduate and part-time students. The university is divided up into several smaller undergraduate colleges including schools of business and information technology, education and educational technology, fine arts, health and human services, humanities and social sciences, and natural sciences and mathematics. Some of the most commonly chosen majors include criminology, elementary education, communications media, nursing, and management.
Admission to Indiana University of Pennsylvania is somewhat competitive, but one need not have been at the top of their high school class to gain admission. Last year, over 8,700 students applied for admission to the school and approximately 5,150 of those students were accepted; of those, about 2,760 matriculated. The admitted students had a combined average SAT score of about 950 and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 18 to 26. Additionally, over 38% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.1.
Indiana University of Pennsylvania has a less than terrific student to faculty ratio of 19:1, and many of the introductory classes are held in large lecture halls, and students report feeling quite anonymous. However, many of the more specific, advanced classes going towards a student's major are usually much smaller and held in comparatively small discussion groups and seminars. In general, the professors get high marks for being accessible during office hours, and they are usually eager to help students in any way possible.
The Social Scene
The town of Indiana is quite small and incredibly safe, although it doesn't really offer students very much in the way of entertainment, besides being the “Christmas Tree Capital of the World.” There are a couple of bars, but apparently, they aren't very popular with students, and are pretty strict when it comes to carding. Most students prefer to hang out at the school's several national fraternities and sororities that are notorious from throwing some pretty rowdy parties.
The school has a strict dry policy, and cops are fairly notorious for breaking up these parties rather frequently. Sports aren't really very popular, although the school is a member of the NCAA Division II, and there are some intramural sports that are popular with students such as ultimate frisbee and golf.
The dating scene is pretty vibrant; because there is nothing else to do, dating is one of the only things to do.
What’s Good
“Even though it's a pretty large school, the more advanced classes are pretty small and intimate.”
“The party scene is great, and there is always an awesome party going on on the weekends.”
“People are really friendly, even though the school is pretty large. They actually smile at you when they pass.”
What’s Bad
“The partying gets way too out of hand, and a lot of people let it interfere with their studies.”
“The introductory classes are massive, and I usually just fall asleep.”
“There is a complete lack of school spirit here, and people could care less about sports. They just want to get drunk.”
