Indiana University Southeast Undergraduate Program
Indiana University Southeast Application
The Facts
Indiana University Southeast is a moderately sized member of the larger Indiana University system which has eight campuses scattered throughout the state. This particular campus is located in the town of New Albany, New York, and is home to over 3,000 undergraduate students and approximately 2,500 graduate and part-time professional students. The school offers academic programs in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, business and economics, education, general studies, and nursing. These academic divisions offer a wide array of majors in the areas of biological science, business (a popular major that includes programs in areas as diverse as organizational behavior and business economics), communications and the arts (which includes an excellent journalism program), computer and physical science, education, health professions (which includes a unique program in clinical sciences), and social sciences. Some of the most popular majors include education and business.
Admission to Indiana University Southeast is not particularly competitive; however, the number of students who apply increases with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 800 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 750 of those students were accepted; of those, about 500 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 940 to 1015, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 19 to 24. Additionally, more than 49% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.5.
Indiana University Southeast has a manageable student to faculty ratio of 17:1, and while many of the general education and introductory courses are held in lecture halls, they are usually supplemented by a significantly smaller seminar course where students are able to discuss the content of the previous lecture.
The Social Scene
The town of New Albany is quite suburban and family-oriented, thus it doesn’t really offer much to students in the way of entertainment besides the expected suburban amenities. However, the city of Louisville, Kentucky is only about 10 minutes away by car, and many students head into the city on the weekends to take advantage of the city’s more appealing entertainment options. The university is home to six national fraternities and sororities, and many students join a Greek organization at some point in their academic careers. The parties the Greeks throw on the weekends are quite popular with the entire student body, and drinking is definitely the most popular means of social interaction.
The dating scene is quite vibrant, and men, there are quite a few less of you than women, so expect to be hounded...
What’s Good
“Some of the majors offered here are really specific, which is nice for those of us with rather obscure interests.”
“I really love the party scene we have here, it doesn’t really get too out of control.”
“The teachers here are amazing. They have a lot of really helpful career advice to give.”
What’s Bad
“There’s nothing to do around here; you have to drive into Louisville to find anything worthwhile to do.”
“The housing isn’t as plentiful and readily available as it should be.”
“I wish the student body were more diverse; right now, it’s pretty homogenous.”
