Juniata College Application
The Facts
Juniata College is a small liberal arts and sciences college that is located in the town of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, and is home to over 1,350 undergraduate students. The college has a rather unique curriculum in which students devise their own “Programs of Emphasis,” with help from a faculty advisor. There are over fifty existing P.O.E.'s that students can choose from, or they can combine several of them to make a more unique educational experience. There is a definite emphasis on preprofessional study, and many students choose to take advantage of the school's plentiful research opportunities and internship programs. Some of the most popular majors include biology, pre-health, education, accounting, business, chemistry, and psychology.
Admission to Juniata College is not terrifically competitive numerically; however, the applicant pool usually consists of strongly motivated, self-directed students who have an idea of their intended career. Last year, over 1,600 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 1,180 of those students were accepted; of those, about 380. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1070 to 1270, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 26 to 32. Additionally, over 74% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.71.
Juniata College has a rather manageable student to faculty ratio of 13:1, and it is rare to find a class with more than 20 students. In general, teachers receive lots of praise from students for being incredibly accessible and ready to help. They usually stick around after class to answer any pressing questions, and have been known to give out their home phone numbers and personal email addresses so they will be available to students 24-7.
The Social Scene
The town of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania is rather small, and doesn't really offer students much in the way of entertainment; however, it is located at the base of the Appalachian Mountains, and is surrounded by gorgeous nature in every direction. There is even a Peace Chapel on campus designed by the same architect as the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in Washington D.C. The campus itself is almost as beautiful as the surroundings, and boasts amenities such as an observatory, a ceramics studio, and a fantastic student athletic and recreation center.
There are no fraternities or sororities at the college, but this doesn't seem to bother students, who have created their own yearly traditions to keep themselves entertained. The school is about a half an hour drive from Penn State, where there is plenty of party action for students to join. Most students own cars, which make weekend road trips to Philadelphia and nearby cities a popular option.
The dating scene is pretty vibrant and diverse, and the students tend to be the friendly sort who will gladly accept a date or two...
