The Facts
Kentucky State University is a small, public institution that is located in the town of Frankfort, Kentucky, and is home to over 1,600 undergraduate students and approximately 500 graduate and part-time professional students. The students are able to take courses in one of the university's four undergraduate schools or the graduate school, which offer academic programs in both the liberal arts and sciences and preprofessional studies. The school's academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of biological science, business (a large and popular program with majors as diverse as apparel and accessories marketing as well as business administration and management), communications and the arts (home to wonderful programs in art and music performance), computer and physical science, education (also a very popular program), and social sciences. Some of the most popular majors are psychology, education, business administration and management, English, and music performance.
Admission to Kentucky State University is not competitive in the least, as virtually every student who applies is accepted. Last year, 822 students applied for admission to the school and 822 were accepted; of those, about 600 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 850 to 1000 and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 17 to 24. Additionally, more than 25% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.4.
Kentucky State University has a high student to faculty ratio of 20:1, and other public schools of comparable size manage to keep this ratio much lower. However, while, some of the general education courses are held as lectures, they are usually supplemented by significantly smaller seminar classes where students have the opportunity to discuss the content of the previous lecture. Some students complain that their professors aren't terrifically accessible; however, there are others who simply rave about the caliber and personability of their professors.
The Social Scene
The town of Frankfort is quite small, and doesn't really offer students much in the way of entertainment, however the larger city of Lexington is only about 25 minutes away by car, and many students head into the urban area on the weekends to take advantage of its more appealing cultural and social offerings. The university itself is home to 11 national fraternities and sororities which are extremely popular with students. The Greeks pretty much govern the on- campus social scene, and their weekend parties are a particular mainstay of every student's social calendar. The university has somewhat of a reputation for being a rowdy party school where drinking is absolutely the most popular mode of social interaction.
The dating scene isn't very diverse, and you shouldn't expect much old-fashioned romanticism. Frat party anyone?
What's Good
"We have all the resources of a state school, but we're nice and small."
"I find the people to be very friendly here, and even though the town is small, they're proud to be a college town."
"It's nice to be so close to Lexington. It's a great town to go to on the weekends."
What's Bad
"There isn't really much to do on campus besides go to parties and get drunk. Not a whole lot of variety in that."
"There are a lot of professors who don't really seem to care very much about us. I never see them outside of class."
"The Greeks are really obnoxious here. They think they run the place, and unfortunately, they kind of do."
