The Facts

Mercer University is a rather small, private institution located in the town of Macon, Georgia, and is affiliated with the Baptist church. The school has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 6,000 graduate and undergraduate students, however, the university's Walter F. George School of Law is significantly smaller, and is home to about 424 graduate law students. The average age of enrollment is around 24, and it is quite rare for any students to enter the school directly from their undergraduate education. The school is perhaps best known for its emphasis on practical legal skills, as well as for its intimate atmosphere. The school offers degrees in the 3 year JD, as well as a combined 4 year degree in the JD/MBA in business administration. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of civil procedure, commercial law, constitutional law, corporation securities law, criminal law, environmental law, government services, intellectual property law, international law, internet law, labor law, legal history, legal writing certificate program, professionalist ethics, property, taxation, as well as trial advocacy.

Admission to Mercer University's Walter F. George School of Law is quite competitive among the relatively few students who apply; last year, over 1,630 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 375 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 143 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average LSAT score ranging from 154 to 158, as well as an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.4. Students are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis, and there is currently no early application program in place.

The school of law has 62 faculty members, all who come from very diverse legal and professional backgrounds. Students rave about their accessibility and approachability, saying they are always there to help. The school has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of about 14:1, and the small classes allow for plenty of interaction and discussion between students and their professors.

Employment Facts

Students at the school of law don't seem terribly anxious about finding jobs after they graduate; in fact, over 98% of the most recent graduating class were able to find jobs within a few months of receiving their degrees. Students are most frequently hired by firms such as King and Spalding, McKenna Long and Aldridge, Moore Ingram Johnson and Steele, Marietta, Martin Snow LLP, Alston and Bird, James Bates Pope and Spivey.
