The Facts

New York University is a rather large, private institution located in the heart of Manhattan, New York, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 48,000 students. The university's School of Law, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 1,310 graduate law students. The average age of entrance is around 25, and it is rather rare for students to enter the school directly out of their undergraduate education. The School of Law is perhaps best known for its connections within the New York law community, as well as for its fantastic research resources and internship opportunities. The school offers degrees in the LLM and JSD, as well as many joint degrees in the JD/LLM, JD/MBA, JD/MUP, JD/MSW, JD/MA, JD/PhD, JD/MPA in conjunction with the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, as well as a JD/MPA in cooperation with the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard Law School. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of clinical programs, commercial law, constitutional law, corporate law, criminal law, environmental law, human rights law, international law, labor law, legal history, legal philosophy, public interest, taxation, as well as trade regulation.

Admission to New York University's School of Law is extremely competitive among the many students who apply; last year, over 8,220 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 1,628 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 440 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average LSAT score ranging from 167-172, as well as an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.7. Students are notified of their admissions status by the end of the month of April, and are able to take advantage of the school's early application program if they so choose.

NYU's School of Law has 197 faculty members, who students say are generally very committed to the school, although they can be difficult to get a hold of at times. The school has a very manageable students to faculty ratio of 11:1, and students agree that the fairly small classes are one of the best aspects of their overall academic experience.

Employment Facts

NYU School of Law students don't seem to have to worry about finding a job after completing their degrees, as the school has a job placement rate of 100%. The employers that most frequently hire students include private law firms, public interest organizations, government agencies, corporations, as well as public accounting firms.

What's Good

"There are so many opportunities to put the things you've learned into practical application."

What's Bad

"There are a lot of people here who are always trying to out do everyone else. It can be very annoying and disheartening."

"There isn't nearly enough financial aid available to graduate students, and this school is extremely expensive."

"There are some professors who are just too busy to give any assistance outside of class, which can be a pain."
