The Facts

Northern Kentucky University is a rather large, public institution located in the town of Highland Heights, Kentucky, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 15,000 students. The university's Salmon P. Chase College of Law, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 580 graduate law students. The average age of enrollment is around 27, and it is quite rare for any students to enter the school directly from their undergraduate education. The school is perhaps best known for its outstanding faculty, its wonderful library and research resources, as well as for its challenging and evolving curriculum. The school offers degrees in the 3 year JD, as well as a combined degree in the 4 year JD/MBA in business administration. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of legal theory, legal history, legal philosophy, criminal law, civil procedure, as well as human rights law.

Admission to Northern Kentucky University's Simon P. Chase College of Law is fairly competitive among the relatively few students who apply; last year, over 680 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 252 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 108 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average LSAT score ranging from 152 to 157, as well as an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.3. Students are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis, and there is currently no early application program in place.

The university's college of law has 63 faculty members, all of whom come from outstanding and very diverse legal and professional backgrounds. Students agree that one of the best parts of their educational experience has been the professors. They say that they are always accessible, and use humor and wit to make potentially boring material engaging and interesting. The school has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of about 15:1, and the small classes allow for plenty of interaction and discussion between students and their professors.

Employment Facts

Students at Northern Kentucky University's College of Law don't seem to be terribly anxious about finding jobs after graduating; in fact, over 90% of the most recent graduating class were able to find jobs within a few months of receiving their degrees, and had an average starting salary of about $55,917. Students are most frequently hired by employers such as Fidelity Investments, Proctor and Gamble, Dinsmore and Shohl, the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy, as well as Freund Freeze and Arnold.

What's Good

"The faculty here is absolutely incredible, and they are obviously incredibly capable in their various areas of specialty."

"Students tend to really encourage one another to do well. It's a very supportive atmosphere in general."

"The school is a fairly good deal, particularly if you are a resident of Kentucky."

What's Bad

"There can be some unnecessary competition that happens between students. That can be a bit discouraging."

"There isn't really any on campus graduate housing available, and it is quite difficult to find anything affordable nearby."

"There are some professors who give ridiculous amounts of work that they must know is impossible to complete."
