The Facts

Rutgers University is a rather large, public institution located in the city of Newark, New Jersey, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 20,000 students. The university's School of Law, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 825 graduate law students. The average age of enrollment is around 27, and it is quite rare for students to enter the school directly from their undergraduate education. The school is perhaps best known for its diversity of teaching methods and styles, its wonderful research resources, as well as for its abundance of internship, externship, and clerkship opportunities. The school offers degrees in the JD, LLM, as well as joint degrees in the 4 year JD/MBA, the 6 year JD/MD, the 5 year JD/PhD jurisprudence, the 4 year JD/MA in criminal justice, the 4 year JD/MCRP in city and regional planning, as well as the 4 year JD/MSW. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of civil procedure, commercial law, constitutional law, corporation securities law, criminal law, environmental law, global affairs, government services, human rights law, intellectual property law, international business, international law, labor law, legal history, legal philosophy, property, as well as taxation.

Admission to Rutger's School of Law is quite competitive among the many students who apply; last year, over 3,535 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 728 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 285 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average LSAT score ranging from 153 to 162, as well as an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.3. Students are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis, and there is currently no early application program in place.

The university's law school has 64 faculty members, and students agree that they are extremely dedicated to the school itself as well as their students. Students remark on the passion and enthusiasm of their professors, and say they have a lot of experience and advice to give. The school has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 17:1, and the small classes ensure that there is plenty of discussion between students and their professors.

Employment Facts

Students at Rutger's School of Law don't seem to be too anxious about getting a job after graduation; over 94% of the most recent graduating class were able to find jobs within a few months of receiving their degree. Students are most frequently hired by federal judges, New Jersey State Court judges, large New York and New Jersey law firms, private law firms, corporations, as well as private legal services.

What's Bad

"There can be some really fierce competition between students, and people can be pretty cutthroat."
