The Facts

Texas Tech University is a rather large, public institution located in the town of Lubbock, Texas, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 26,000 students. The university's School of Law, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 683 graduate law students. The average age of enrollment is around 25, and it is fairly rare for any of the students to enter the school directly from their undergraduate education. The school is perhaps best known for its wonderful research resources, as well as for its rigorous curriculum and emphasis on practical legal skills. The school offers degrees in the 3 year JD, the 1 year LLM, as well as combined degrees in the 3 year JD/MBA, the 3.5. year JD/MPA, the 3 to 3.5 year JD/MS in agriculture and applied science, the 3 to 3.5. year JD/MS in accounting, the 3 year JD/MS in environmental toxicology, the 3 year JD/FFP in personal financial planning, the 3 to 4 year JD/MS in biotechnology, as well as the 4 year JD/MS in soil science and entomology. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of civil procedure, commercial law, constitutional law, corporation securities law, criminal law, environmental law, government services, human rights law, intellectual property law, international law, labor law, bioterrorism law, law and science, legal history, legal philosophy, property, taxation, as well as water law.

Admission to Texas Tech University's School of Law is quite competitive among those who apply; last year, over 1,550 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 500 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 244 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average LSAT score ranging from 150 to 157, as well as an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.5. Students are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis, and are able to take advantage of the early application program if they so choose.

The School of Law has 52 faculty members, all of whom come from very diverse legal and professional backgrounds. Students rave about their accessibility and availability, saying that they are always available to give advice or help a student out. The school has a student to faculty ratio of 20:1, and many students complain that they feel there are classes that are too large for what they are trying to accomplish.

Employment Facts

Students at the School of Law don't seem terribly nervous about finding jobs after graduating; in fact, over 98% of the most recently graduating students were able to find jobs within a few months of receiving their degrees, and had an average starting salary of about $70,200. Students are most frequently hired by employers such as Jones Day Reavis and Pogue, Thompson and Knight, Haynes and Boone, Thompson and Coe, Cousins and Irons, Strasburger and Price, as well as Cooper and Aldous.
