The Facts

The State University of New York at Buffalo is a rather large, public institution located in the town of Buffalo, New York, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 25,500 students. The university's Law School, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 734 graduate law students. The average age of enrollment is around 25, and it is fairly rare for any of the students to enter the school directly from their undergraduate education. The school is perhaps best known for their wonderful library and consequent research resources, as well as for their connections within the legal and professional community. The school offers degrees in the areas of the 1 year LLM in criminal law, the 1 year LLM for international lawyers, the 3 year JD, as well as combined degrees in the 4 year JD/MSW, the 4 year JD/MBA, the 4 year JD/MPH, the 4 year JD/MLS, the 3.5 year JD/MA in applied economics, the 4 year JD/MA, as well as the 5 to 6 year JD/PhD. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of community economic development, civil litigation, corporation securities law, criminal law, environmental law, family law, government services, health law, human rights law, intellectual property law, international law, labor law, as well as social justice.

Admission to SUNY Buffalo's Law School is quite competitive among those who apply; last year, over 1,444 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 517 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 246 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average LSAT score ranging from 152 to 158, as well as an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.4. Students are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis, and there is currently no early applications program in place.

The Law School has 110 faculty members, all of whom come from very diverse legal and professional backgrounds. In general, students rave about the accessibility and erudition of their professors, citing the fact that the curriculum is very flexible, and changes from class to class. The school has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of about 14:1, and the small classes allow for plenty of discussion and interaction between students and their professors.

Employment Facts

Students at SUNY Buffalo's Law School don't seem terribly concerned about finding jobs after graduation, and why should they be? Over 98% of the most recently graduating class were able to find jobs within a few months of receiving their degrees, and had an average starting salary of around $50,107. Students are most frequently hired by employers such as Dechert, Lebeouf Lamb, Hodgson Russ, Dewey Ballantine, Nixon Peabody, the New York District Attorney's Office, as well as the Kings County District Attorney's Office.

What's Good

"The administration really allows professors to make the curriculum their own, which makes classes a lot more interesting."

"The school is actually pretty laid back, especially for a law school, which aren't usually known for being relaxed."

"The student body is really diverse, which had made a big difference in how I approach law itself."

What's Bad

"The school could focus a bit less on theory, and a bit more on practical skills and preparation for the bar exam."

"There is never enough on campus graduate housing available, and you have to find stuff on your own most of the time."

"There could be more internships available. The good ones go pretty quickly."
