The Facts

The University of California, Los Angeles, is a rather large, public institution located in the appropriately titled city of Los Angeles, California, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 28,000 students. The university’s School of Law, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 940 graduate law students. The average age of enrollment is around 25, and it is fairly rare for any of the students to enter the school directly from their undergraduate education. The school is perhaps best known for its wide diversity of courses and students, its emphasis on public interest law, as well as for its strong connections within the city’s legal and professional communities. The school offers degrees in the 3 year JD, the 4 year S/JD, as well as combined degrees in the JD/MA in African American and American Indian studies, the JD/MBA, the JD/MPH, the JD/MA in public policy, the JD/MSW in social welfare, as well as the JD/MA in urban planning. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of civil procedure, constitutional law, corporate law, corporation securities law, criminal law, critical race studies, environmental law, human rights law, intellectual property law, international law, labor law, property, public interest law, public policy, taxation, as well as tax law.

Admission to UCLA’s School of Law is extremely competitive among the many students who apply; last year, over 7,260 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 987 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 308 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average LSAT score ranging from 163 to 168, as well as an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.6. Students are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis, and there is currently no early application program in place.

The School of Law has 145 faculty members, all of whom come from very diverse legal and professional backgrounds. Students rave about their accessibility and approachability, saying that despite their busy schedules and high standing, they’re always willing to help students out. The school has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of about 12:1, and the small classes allow for plenty of interaction and discussion between students and their professors.

Employment Facts

Students at the School of Law don’t seem anxious about finding jobs after graduating; in fact, over 99% of the most recently graduating students were able to find jobs within a few months of receiving their degrees, and had an average starting salary of about $93,585. Students are most frequently hired by employers such as law firms, corporations, governmental agencies, as well as public interest organizations.
