The Facts

The University of Florida is a rather large, public institution located in the town of Gainesville, Florida, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 24,000 students. The university’s Levin College of Law, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 1,166 graduate law students. The average age of enrollment is around 25, and it is fairly rare for any of the students to enter the school directly from their undergraduate education. The school is perhaps best known for its abundant internship, externship, and clerkship opportunities, as well as for its popular tax law program. The school offers degrees in the LLM in taxation, the LLM in comparative law, the S/JD in taxation, as well as the 3 year JD. The school also offers combined degrees in the JD/MA in urban and regional planning, history, sociology, accounting, mass communication, forest research and conservation, exercise and sports science, medical sciences, environmental engineering, Latin American studies, health administration, anthropology, and real estate, the JD/MBA, the JD/PhD, as well as the JD/PharmD. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in taxation, children and family law, environmental law, estates and trusts practice, intellectual property law, as well as international law.

Admission to the Levin College of Law is quite competitive among the many students who apply; last year, over 3,182 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 500 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 195 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average LSAT score ranging from 156 to 162, as well as an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.7. Students are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis, and there is currently no early application program in place.

The Levin College of Law has 86 faculty members, all of whom come from diverse legal and professional backgrounds. Students rave about their experience and their accessibility, saying they are always willing to help a confused student out. The school has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of about 14:1, and the small classes ensure that there is plenty of discussion and interaction between students and their professors.

Employment Facts

Students at the Levin College of Law don’t seem to be too nervous about finding jobs after graduating; in fact, over 90% of the most recently graduating students were able to find jobs within a few months of receiving their degrees, and had an average starting salary of about $55,242. Students are most frequently hired by employers such as Foley and Lardner, King and Spalding, Holland and Knight, Troutman Sanders, Steel Hector and Davis, Gunster Yoakley, Powell Goldstein, as well as Lowndes Drosdick.

What's Good

“The professors are incredibly experienced, and have a lot of practical knowledge to pass on.”

“The students are surprisingly laid back. I haven’t experienced any negative competition here.”

“They are in the middle of a $25 million renovation of the campus, which is badly needed.”

What's Bad

“There isn’t a library at the moment because of renovation, so we have this tiny makeshift one.”

“I wish we didn’t have to focus quite so much on legal writing. It’s pretty boring.”

“The tax law program is very strong, but there could be a bit of tweaking done to the other programs.”
