The Facts
The University of Houston is a rather large, public institution located in the appropriately titled city of Houston, Texas, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 35,180 students. The university’s Law Center, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 1,100 graduate law students. The average age of enrollment is around 25, and it is fairly rare for any of the students to enter the school directly from their undergraduate education. The school is perhaps best known for its emphasis on practical legal skills, as well as for its abundant amount of internships, externships, and clerkships available. The school offers degrees in the 1 year LLM in health law, intellectual property law, tax law, energy and natural resources law, as well as international law. The school also offers combined degrees in the JD/MBA, the JD/MPH, the JD/MA in history, the JD/MD, the JD/PhD in medical humanities, the JD/MSW, as well as the JD/PhD in criminal justice. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of advocacy, commercial law, consumer law, criminal law, environmental law, health law, higher education law, intellectual property law, as well as international law.
Admission to the University of Houston’s Law Center is quite competitive among the many students who apply; last year, over 3,575 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 810 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 270 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average LSAT score ranging from 158 to 161, as well as an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.5. Students are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis, and are able to take advantage of the school’s early admissions program if they so choose.
The Law Center has 104 faculty members, all of whom come from very diverse legal and professional backgrounds. Students rave about their accessibility and approachability, saying that they are obviously dedicated to both the school and its students. The school has a rather manageable student to faculty ratio of about 17:1, and the small classes allow for plenty of discussion and interaction between students and their professors.
Employment Facts
Students at the Law Center don’t seem terribly anxious about finding jobs after graduation. In fact, over 90% of the most recently graduating students were able to find jobs within a few months of receiving their degrees, and had an average starting salary of about $74,755. Students are most frequently hired by employers such as Baker and Botts, Locke Liddel and Sapp, Fulbright and Jaworski, Vinson and Elkins, Bracewell and Giuliani, the Harris County district attorney, as well as Weil Gotshal and Manges.
