The Facts

The University of Idaho is a rather large, public institution located in the town of Moscow, Idaho, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 15,000 students. The university’s College of Law, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 300 graduate law students. The average age of enrollment is around 27, and it is fairly rare for any of the students to enter the school directly from their undergraduate education. The school is perhaps best known for its strong emphasis on ethical issues, as well as trial lawyering. The school offers degrees in the 3 year JD, as well as combined degrees in the JD/MS in environmental science, the JD/Macc, as well as the JD/MES. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of environmental law, advocacy and dispute resolution, business and entrepreneurship, as well as environmental and natural resources.

Admission to the University of Idaho’s College of Law is quite competitive among the relatively few students who apply; last year, over 948 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 270 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 114 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average LSAT score ranging from 153 to 158, as well as an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.4. Students are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis, and there is currently no early applications program in place.

The College of Law has 25 faculty members, all of whom come from very diverse legal and professional backgrounds. Students rave about the accessibility of their professors, saying they have developed strong bonds with many of them. The school has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of about 15:1, and the small classes ensure that there is plenty of interaction and discussion between students and their professors and peers.

Employment Facts

Students at the College of Law don’t seem terribly nervous about finding jobs after graduating, even though the career services program has received some criticism in recent years. Over 96% of the most recently graduating students have been able to find jobs within a few months of receiving their degrees, and had an average starting salary of about $46,822. Students are most frequently hired by employers such as private local and national law firms, particularly in Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Utah, and Nevada, as well as various governmental agencies and judicial clerkships.

What's Good
