The Facts

The University of Kentucky is a rather large, public institution located in the city of Lexington, Kentucky, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 26,500 students. The university’s College of Law, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 420 graduate law students. The average age of enrollment is around 23, and it is not rare for students to enter the school directly from their undergraduate education. The school is perhaps best known for its emphasis on practical legal skills, as well as for its connections within the state’s legal and professional communities. The school offers degrees in the 3 year JD, as well as several combined degrees in the 4 year JD/MPA, the 4 year JD/MBA, as well as the 4 year JD/Masters in diplomacy and international commerce. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of advocacy, civil procedure, commercial law, constitutional law, corporation securities law, criminal law, environmental law, human rights law, intellectual property law, international law, labor law, as well as property and taxation.

Admission to the University of Kentucky’s College of Law is fairly competitive among those who apply; last year, over 1,272 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 400 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 144 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.6, as well as an average LSAT score ranging from 156 to 162. Students are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis, and there is currently no early application program available.

The College of Law has 29 faculty members, all of whom come from very diverse legal and professional backgrounds. Students agree that the faculty is the best asset of the school, saying they do everything they can to make classes interesting and engaging. The school has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 16:1, and the small classes allow for plenty of discussion and interaction between students and their professors.

Employment Facts

Students at the College of Law don’t seem terribly nervous about finding jobs after graduation. The school is well connected within the professional community; in fact, over 98% of the most recently graduating students were able to find jobs within a few months of receiving their degrees, and had an average starting salary of about $55,000. Students are most frequently hired by employers such as various major firms in Cincinnati, Nashville, West Virginia, Washington D.C., New York City, as well as Atlanta.
