The Facts

The University of Mississippi is a rather large, public institution located in the town of Oxford, Mississippi, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 16,500 students. The university’s School of Law, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 580 graduate law students. The average age of enrollment is around 24, and it is fairly rare for any of the students to enter the school directly from their undergraduate education. The school is perhaps best known for its strict grading curve, its conservative mentality, as well as for its connections within the state’s legal and professional communities. The school offers degrees in the 3 year JD, as well as a combined degree in the 4 year JD/MBA. Some of the most popular programs include courses in the areas of commercial law, corporation securities law, criminal law, environmental law, international law, remote sensing and space law, as well as taxation law.

Admission to the University of Mississippi’s School of Law is quite competitive among those who apply; last year, over 1,940 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 385 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 170 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average LSAT score ranging from 153 to 159, as well as an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.5. Students are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis, and there is currently no early application program available.

The School of Law has 32 faculty members, all of whom come from very diverse legal and professional backgrounds. In general, students rave about their accessibility, saying they are always there to help, and also encourage diverse viewpoints in their classes. The school has a less-than-stellar student to faculty ratio of 22:1, but the administration does everything they can to keep the classes small.

Employment Facts

Students at the School of Law don’t seem terribly anxious about finding jobs after graduating; in fact, over 98% of the most recently graduating students were able to find jobs within a few months of receiving their degrees, and had an average starting salary of about $62,882. Students are most frequently hired by employers such as various private practice law firms throughout the state and country, judicial offices and clerkships, as well as various governmental and public interest organizations.

What's Good

“Everyone here treats you with respect; you feel like a future lawyer, not just a law student.”

“The professors here always have their doors open to listen to your thoughts and answer your questions.”

”The school is actually quite a good deal; you get a wonderful legal education for a very low price.”

What's Bad

“People do get competitive here, and because the school is small, it makes everyone miserable.”

“There is never enough on campus graduate housing, and what exists is very expensive.”

“The career services office could do a better job with catering to the needs of individual students.”
