The Facts

The University of Oregon is a rather large, public institution located in the town of Eugene, Oregon, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 24,000 students. The university’s School of Law, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 514 graduate law students. The average age of enrollment is around 25, and it is fairly rare for any of the students to enter the school directly from their undergraduate education. The school is perhaps best known for its terrific research resources, its new law school facilities, as well as for its emphasis on hands-on learning and programs. The school offers degrees in the 3 year JD and the 1 year LLM. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of commercial law, constitutional law, corporation securities law, criminal law, environmental law, government services, human rights law, international law, labor law, legal history, as well as property and taxation.

Admission to the University of Oregon’s School of Law is quite competitive among those who apply; last year, over 1,895 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 648 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 185 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average LSAT score ranging from 156 to 161, as well as an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.4. Students are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis, and there is currently no early application program in place.

The School of Law has 56 faculty members, all of whom come from very diverse legal and professional backgrounds. In general, students rave about their accessibility and approachability, saying that they are always willing to offer help to those students who may need it. The school has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 9:1, and the small classes allow for plenty of discussion and interaction between students and their professors.

Employment Facts

Students at the School of Law don’t seem terribly anxious about finding jobs after graduating; in fact, over 90% of the most recently graduating class were able to find jobs within a few months of receiving their degrees, and had an average starting salary of about $52,255. Students are most frequently hired by employers such as various law firms within the state, federal courts, the Oregon appellate courts, Lane County and Portland circuit courts, the Oregon Department of Justice, the Washington attorney general’s office, as well as the Western public defender’s office.
