The Facts

The University of San Francisco is a rather small, private institution located in the appropriately titled city of San Francisco, California, and is affiliated with the Roman Catholic church. The university has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 8,300 students, however, the university's School of Law is significantly smaller, and is home to about 716 graduate law students. The average age of enrollment is around 26, and it is quite rare for any of the students to enter the school directly from their undergraduate education. The school is perhaps best known for its wonderful research resources, its emphasis on integrity and public interest law, as well as for its distinctly down-to-earth Californian atmosphere. The school offers degrees in the 3 year JD, the 1 year LLM in international transactions and comparative law, and intellectual property, as well as a combined degree in the 4 year JD/MBA. Some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of intellectual property law, international law, as well as public interest law.

Admission to the University of San Francisco's School of Law is extremely competitive among the many students who apply; last year, over 4,580 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 1,120 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 255 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average LSAT score ranging from 157 to 162, as well as an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.3. Students are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis, and there is currently no early application program in place.

The School of Law has 89 faculty members, all of whom come from very diverse legal and professional backgrounds. In general, students love the dedication and accessibility of their professors, saying that the school continues to attract some of the nation's best legal minds. The school has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of about 17:1, and the small classes allow for plenty of discussion and interaction between students and their professors.

Employment Facts

Students at the School of Law don't seem terribly nervous about finding jobs after graduating; in fact, over 90% of the most recently graduating students were able to find jobs within a few months of receiving their degrees, and had an average starting salary of about $78,700. Students are most frequently hired by employers such as Bingham and McCutcheon, Morgan Lewis and Brockius, Reed Smith, as well as Wilson Sonsini Goodrich and Rosati.

What's Good

"The professors really make an effort to be available to you. They actually want you to succeed in their classes."
