The Facts

Washburn University is a rather small, public institution located in the city of Topeka, Kansas, and has a combined graduate and undergraduate population of over 11,000 students. The university's School of Law, however, is significantly smaller, and is home to about 462 graduate law students. The average age of enrollment is around 26, and it is quite rare for any of the students to enter the school directly from their undergraduate education. The school is perhaps best known for its wonderful research resources, its emphasis on litigation training, as well as for its rigorous curriculum. The school offers a degree in the 3 year JD only, and some of the most popular programs of study include courses in the areas of advocacy, commercial law, corporation securities law, criminal law, environmental law, family law, rural law, as well as taxation.

Admission to Washburn University's School of Law is quite competitive among the relatively few students who apply; last year, over 1,170 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 370 of those students were accepted. Eventually however, only about 157 of the admitted students actually enrolled for the coming semester. The admitted students had an average LSAT score ranging from 151 to 156, as well as an average undergraduate GPA of about a 3.2. Students are notified of their admissions status on a rolling basis, and there is currently no early application program in place.

The School of Law has 31 faculty members, all of whom come from very diverse legal and professional backgrounds, and have had plenty of professional experience. In general, students love the dedication and erudition of their professors, saying that they always have practical and useful advice to share. The school has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of about 14:1, and the small classes ensure that there is plenty of discussion and interaction between students and their professors.

Employment Facts

Students at the School of Law don't seem terribly nervous about finding jobs after graduating; in fact, over 97% of the most recently graduating class were able to find jobs within the first few months of receiving their degree, and had an average starting salary of about $45,630. Students are most frequently hired by employers such as local and national private law firms, various governmental and public interest organizations, as well as the legal departments of large businesses and corporations throughout the country.
