The Facts

Lewis University is a rather small, private institution located in the town of Romeoville, Illinois, and is affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church, as run by the De La Salle Christian Brothers. The school is home to over 2,500 undergraduate students and approximately 1,500 graduate and part-time professional students, who are able to study in one of the university’s four undergraduate or eleven graduate schools. These schools offer academic programs in the liberal arts, as well as in some preprofessional studies. The academic divisions offer a wide array of majors in the areas of biological science, business (home to a wonderful sports management program), communications and the arts, (which offers an innovative major in multimedia, as well as a unique major in illustration) computer and physical science (home to a hard to find major in atmospheric science), engineering and environmental design (which includes a comprehensive aviation program), health professions (which includes a wonderful program in community health services), and social sciences. Some of the mostly commonly selected majors include aviation, criminal social justice, nursing, and education.

Admission to Lewis University is quite competitive academically, however, the overall number of students who apply isn’t astronomical. Last year, over 1,600 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 1,060 of those students were accepted; of those, about 460 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1140 to 1200, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 24 to 32. Additionally, more than 65% of those admitted were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.7.

Lewis University has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 16:1, and it is quite rare to find a class with more than 18 students at any level. The overwhelming majority of classes are held in small seminar groups, which are primarily discussion-based. Students also rave about their professors, noting their obvious dedication to the school, as well as their concern for the general well-being of their students.

The Social Scene

The town of Romeoville is technically a part of the suburban sprawl of the city of Chicago, which is only about 30 miles away. In fact, students often take weekend mini-road trips into the city to take advantage of its multitude of cultural and social offerings. Lewis University is home to twelve national and local fraternities and sororities, and a pretty vast number of students join a Greek organization at some point in their college careers. The Greeks basically govern the on-campus social life, throwing many weekend parties where drinking is the central element.

The dating scene is reportedly quite good; we hear there are large amounts of attractive guys and girls everywhere you look...

What’s Good

“The university really has a wonderful, intellectual feel within its halls. People tend to really enjoy what they’re doing here.”

“The professors are great, and they have no problem clarifying and helping out after class is over.”

“The campus is lovely, and when you walk from building to building, it’s quite pleasant.”

What’s Bad

“Sometimes I get really claustrophobic here, and I just want to meet more people outside of the school.”

“Sometimes the Greeks get really obnoxious, and they basically try to run the campus.”

“I don’t think I’d recommend the dining hall food. Just get a microwave and you’re all set.”
