Loras College Application
The Facts
Loras College is a small, private institution located in the town of Dubruque, Iowa, and is affiliated with the Roman Catholic church. The school is home to over 1,600 undergraduate students and approximately 200 graduate and part-time professional students who are able to take courses in both the liberal arts and sciences as well as preprofessional studies. The school offers academic programs in the areas of the humanities, social and behavioral studies, natural sciences, philosophy and religious studies, as well as professional studies. These academic divisions offer broad majors in the areas of biological science (home to an innovative program in biochemistry). business (a large program with majors ranging from accounting to personnel management), communications and the arts, computer and physical science, education (a very popular program with a diverse range of majors), engineering and environmental design (which only offers programs in electrical and electronics engineering), health professions, and social sciences. Some of the most popular majors include accounting, business, communication arts, and education.
Admission to Loras College is not terrifically competitive; however, the number of qualified applicants has been increasing significantly with each passing admissions cycle. Last year, over 1,530 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 1,225 of those students were accepted; of those, about 410 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1050 to 1110, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 22 to 30. Additionally, more than 51% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.6.
Loras College has a very manageable student to faculty ratio of 13:1, and most students agree that one of the best assets of the school is the small class sizes. There are rarely any lecture courses held, and the classes are primarily discussion-based. Professors are very dedicated, and do all they can to make themselves readily available to students for assistance.
The Social Scene
The town of Dubruque is quite small, and doesn’t really offer students much in the way of entertainment, and unfortunately it isn’t very close to any major cities. Most of the activity happens right on campus, where there are plenty of student clubs and organizations to keep students quite busy. The college is home to a couple of local sororities, however, there are no fraternities, and the existing Greek organizations don’t really have much of an influence on campus life. The administration has strict anti-alcohol policies, making the party scene pretty obsolete.
The dating scene isn’t terrifically diverse, but we hear that people are very friendly...
What’s Good
“The people here are so nice, and I felt included from day one, even as a transfer student.”
“I love all my classes; in fact, I don’t think I can think of any I haven’t liked so far.”
“There is a really academic environment here that helps you more easily focus on your studies.”
What’s Bad
“There isn’t anything to do either on campus or off campus. Things can be incredibly dull.”
“I find the homogenous student body to be pretty boring; you are always with the same demographic of people.”
“I wish we had more of a Greek life here. I think it would help to boost up our party scene a little.”
