Louisiana Technical University Application
The Facts
Louisiana Technical University is a moderately sized public institution located in the small town of Ruston, Louisiana. The school is home to over 8,000 undergraduate students and approximately 4,000 graduate and part-time professional students who study at one of the five undergraduate colleges and five graduate colleges. These smaller schools offer academic programs in the areas of arts and sciences, business, agriculture, engineering, health science, education, fine and liberal arts, and human ecology. These academic divisions offer a wide array of majors in the areas of agriculture (which includes unique programs in animal science, and agricultural business management), biological science, business, communications and the arts, computer and physical science, education, engineering and environmental design (which includes a majorial program in airline piloting and navigation), health professions, and social sciences. Despite the school’s name, LTU offers its students many more majors than just the so-called “technical fields.” Some of the most popular majors include business, engineering, aeronautics, education, agriculture, and medical laboratory technology.
Admission to Louisiana Technical University is not incredibly competitive; last year, over 3,800 students applied for admission to the school, and approximately 3,400 of those students were accepted; of those, about 2,120 matriculated. The admitted students had an average combined SAT score ranging from 1010 to 1180, and an average comprehensive ACT score ranging from 20 to 28. Additionally, more than 68% of those admitted were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about 3.68.
LTU has a pretty high student to faculty ratio of 20:1, but while many of the introductory and general education classes are quite large, the more advanced class are significantly smaller and more hands-on. There are also plenty of internships available for students as early as the second semester of their freshman year.
The Social Scene
The town of Ruston is quite small, and doesn’t offer students much in the way of entertainment besides a few local bars and shops. The larger town of Shreveport is about an hour and half’s drive away, and many students make the trip to the town on the weekends. All students are allowed to have cars, and they definitely take advantage of that freedom. LTU is home to fourteen national fraternities and sororities, and many students join a Greek organization at some point. The Greeks basically dictate the on-campus social life, and their weekend bashes are a weekly highlight for the majority of students.
The dating scene is a bit tame, and there isn’t much diversity, but we hear that the campus has an abnormally large number of attractive specimens...
What’s Good
“The parties are great here, and people really know how to have a good time on the weekends.”
“The school is just big enough to have great resources, but also small enough so you get a decent amount of attention from your professors.”
“There are some really specialized majors here that are difficult to find anywhere else. They definitely give you a lot of choices.”
What’s Bad
“People like drinking a little too much here. Parties tend to be very repetitive; people drink and drink and drink, and then they all pass out.”
“The school is stuck out here in the middle out nowhere. Even Shreveport, which isn’t that exciting, is about 90 miles away.”
“There is not diversity here. Everyone seems to be a carbon copy.”
