The Facts

Loyola Marymount University is a Jesuit University located in Los Angeles, California. It is unique in that it offers students an intimate academic setting that is still in a major urban setting. There are amazing programs in film and business administration, and many prominent executives in the film industry are alumni. The school is made up of four undergraduate colleges: liberal arts, business administration, science and engineering, and communication and fine arts (in which the School of Film and Television is housed). Most of the majors offered have a unique focus on ethics, and Loyola Marymount is far less cutthroat than UCLA or USC. The environment is largely supportive and trains students to be “leaders as well as thinkers.”

The school consists of approximately 6,000 undergraduates and the classes are quite small, with a student to faculty ratio of around 13:1. The professors also make themselves very accessible during their business hours, and they are very understanding when it comes to difficulties, and will generally do everything in their power to make the students’ lives less complicated. Students at LMU are very dedicated to their education, and their academic statistics reflect that dedication. The Class of 2004 had an average SAT score ranging from 1060 to 1250, and an average ACT cumulative score ranging from 23 to 27. Over 95% of them were ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class with an average GPA of 3.37.

Some of the most popular majors at Loyola Marymount include business administration, communication studies, liberal studies, psychology and political science. The film and television school is without a doubt one of the best programs in the country, and is a major draw for many students, paired with the fact it is situated in right in the crux of the film industry.

The Social Scene

Students at LMU insist that the religious component is really very voluntary, and doesn’t intrude into daily life or practice at all. The only required religious component are two classes in spirituality. It is far from narrow-minded, as students can choose from Buddhism, World Religions or Roots of the Catholic Tradition, among others.

The students at LMU are, however, fairly mainstream and conservative, and the party life doesn’t tend to get very out of hand. Fraternities and sororities are quite popular, however, they are more known for their dedication to the community, such as a yearly trip to Tijuana, Mexico to build houses. The athletic program at LMU is also quite strong. It is a Division I member of the NCAA and sponsors seventeen varsity sports (not including football though); games, however, are not very well attended.

As for dating, if clean-cut, all-American boys and good Catholic girls sounds like your bag, you won’t have any trouble.
